KIOSC Food Futures

Students in Year 9 had their first visit to KIOSC this year to gain an understanding of how we can change the way we farm our food resources more effectively.

How can we feed a growing global population nutritious food?

The global population was estimated to reach 9.6 billion by the year 2015. The global food challenge then as now, is to feed the population. With sprawling urban development, reducing climate change emissions, protecting ecosystems and resources such as water is a major concern for all of us.

Students investigated how we can continue to feed a global population.

BRIX

Students used refractometers to measure the nutritional content of fresh, frozen and processed food, understanding why food is picked and processed in a variety of ways.

Food Harvest Challenge

Students investigated automation in fruit harvesting. They programmed EV3 Lego Robots using colour sensors to to automate fruit picking.

Protein Alternatives

Students learnt about the myths around different sources of protein, such as insects. Students then designed a marketing strategy to encourage insect consumption. Students also got to taste a “cricket – food grade” and create an example of a “new protein” food by making a cricket lollipop.
