DEVOTION

“Be careful not to do good deeds in front of other people. Don’t do those deeds to be seen by others. If you do, your Father in heaven will not reward you. When you give to needy people, do not announce it by having trumpets blown. Do not be like those who only pretend to be holy. They want to be honoured by other people. When you pray, do not be like those who only pretend to be holy. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners. They want to be seen by other people. When you pray, go into your room. Close the door and pray to your Father, who can’t be seen. Your Father will reward you, because he sees what you do secretly.” – Matthew 6:1-2, 5-6

This week, the students in 5A provided an entertaining explanation of Matthew 6:1-6 using a game show format. After comparing the acts of each team, Judge Luci decided that the most righteous person was the one who prayed quietly and who helped others without drawing attention to themselves. Jazlyn summed it up like this: “Do what you do, not to impress but to bless. Let your light shine for Jesus by being kind in heart and in action.”

It can be a real challenge to live the life Jesus calls us to without drawing attention to it. The students in 5A reminded us that our purpose in helping others is not to be rewarded by those around us, but to be a blessing and to share the love of Jesus.
