Humanities News

Ms Kathryn Badini

Below is a collection of stories about the happenings of the Humanities department. This term, various year levels have been lucky enough to experience both incursions and excursions out in the field relevant to their studies. A big thank you should go to their teachers for organising these experiences.

Daniel Kelly - Year 9 Legal Studies Student

This term, Year 9 Legal Studies students have covered the topic of ‘Doping in Sports”. On Thursday 27th of October, the students engaged in a Microsoft Teams presentation/interview by Australian athletes Samuel Short and Alyce Wood. The two athletes explained processes revolving around doping in sports, and how strictly athletes are monitored. They were both a great help in providing information on this topic for the student’s assignments and we are grateful for their time.

Hammish Darr - Year 9 Legal Studies Student

On the 27th of October, Athletes Sam Short and Alyce Wood spoke to the Year 9 Legal Studies classes on issues concerning doping in sports. They did this to help the Year 9s with their Legal Studies Inquiry report assignment, although it also gave them an insight into the methodologies used by Sports Integrity Australia – The governing body concerning anti-doping in Australian sports. They also shared some shocking statistics with the classes – did you know that one in five supplements sold commonly has banned substances in them?

Also, the athletes shared how often they can be drug tested; a friend of Alyce Wood’s got tested at night, and then again the next morning! At one point, the athletes told the boys that, unlike most developed legal systems, the athletes were considered guilty until proven innocent concerning taking drugs – odd, considering the fact that these laws were made by the Australian government instead of an independent body.

Year 7 Geography

As part of their studies into place and liveability, Year 7 Geography students were able to access both good (and bad…) urban design when they visited Kelvin Grove Urban Village in Week 3. On the day, the boys took a range of data – including field notes, annotated diagrams, people and traffic surveys etc. – to access what makes a place more liveable. They are now completing the same type of data analysis on the MCA yard and will be submitting their proposals for how it could become a more successful place for the many stakeholders. Maybe their ideas will inspire the future Masterplan of the College!
