Expectations

Over the last few newsletters, I have outlined the areas we are focusing on as phase 1 of the changes we are making to sport to make our sports program stronger. So far these have all been things that we as a staff will be doing, but improvement is a two-way street. What we hope the initiatives we are bringing in will motivate and inspire boys and families to ask a bit more of themselves as well as we as a community seek continual improvement to our programs and therefore our success, both on field with results, and off-field with the development of character in the young men.

As we start to roll out handbooks for each sport over the coming 12 months they will outline the specific expectations for boys for that activity. These will be sport specific, and provide relevant information in advance of the season of our expectations of the boys as a college.

There are some basic expectations that I can outline here that will effectively be cross code and apply to most or all activities in sport. Below is the college expectation for uniforms for match days from the start of 2023, with the items shown in the diagrams. All boys are required to have the current playing kit for their sport.

For training for all sports all boys must be in Marist apparel for all sessions. In 2023 this can be the College training shirt/singlet or sport playing shirt or HPE/House shirt. From 2024 it will be the expectation that all boys are in the Marist training shirt, unless specifically altered by the sport, such as rugby union and rugby league, due to the nature of the training.

Boys who sign up for a sport must honour that commitment for the entire season. In season sports must take priority over other spots at the college and also club sport or other external activities.

Any requests to miss matches or training must be approved by the relevant sport coordinator (or year coordinator in larger sports).

Injured players are expected to attend training unless contagious with an illness.

Start times for training are just that- not arrival times. If training starts at 3:30pm that means you are on the field with all equipment needed on ready to go, not just arriving.

Training is work time, not social time. To play at your best you need to train at your best. Attitude is vital here.

All players must have the appropriate equipment for sport, such as shin pads for football, mouthguards for rugby, rugby league, AFL.

Each boy must bring their own full water bottle with them for all training sessions and matches. Team managers will encourage the boys to drink water but ultimately players are responsible for their hydration.

All players are to shake hands/ fist bump with their opponents at the completion of the match. This is to occur before any War Cry or team celebrations occur.

These are just an overview of the basic expectations we will have of the boys in 2023. As mentioned, all sport specific expectations will be outlined in the relevant sport handbooks as they roll out over the next 12 months through the college app.

Uniforms Term 1 Sports 2023

The 2-year change over window the College allowed for the implementation of the new playing uniforms ends at the end of 2022. All players are required to have the current uniform items for all sports in 2023. This starts in Term 1 with volleyball, AFL, cricket and swimming as outlined below.

Players will not be able to play and will be excluded by coaches for having the incorrect uniform for matches.

AFL

Cricket

Swimming

The MCA Racer Briefs, MCA Jammers and MCA towel are not compulsory items.

Training *

*It is recommended that all boys wear the Marist training tee or singlet.

In 2023 all boys are required to wear Marist apparel for all training sessions (this can be training tee, sport playing shirt or house shirt), with a view to the Marist training tee or singlet being required for all training from 2024 onwards.

Student Achievements

Zack Newsham

Zack Newsham (Year 12) recently represented Australia at the World Mountain and Trail Running championships held in Chiang Mai Thailand over the weekend. As part of the Australian team, Zack was able to attend the opening ceremony which he described as a once in a lifetime experience. Zack was the youngest member in the Australian Team and the older team members gave him plenty of advice and encouragement. In hot and humid conditions, on a technical course Zack finished in 29th position for the Junior Male Up/Down World Mountain Running Championships and the first Australian across the line. He has left the event feeling inspired with a drive to make the next championships in Austria in 2023. Zack also sat several maths exams under external supervision in Chiang Mai showing incredible commitment to his sport and academics. Well done to Zack on representing Australia and also to his coach John Purcell from Ashgrove Rangers who provided Zack with the support and pathway for this opportunity.”
