International Day of People with Disability

Next Friday, December 3rd, is International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) - a United Nations day that celebrates the contributions and achievements of people with disability. By acknowledging this important day, we can take action to remove barriers for the 4.4 million Australians with disability and contribute to positive change in our classrooms and our community.

In her TedMed talk (see link below) Sue Austin speaks about the power and joy of seeing the world from new perspectives, and that by thinking in a completely new way freedoms can exist where never envisaged before. The Ted Talk highlight of her underwater and deep sea wheelchair diving can be viewed between [3:15] to [7:05].

Sue Austin: Deep sea diving ... in a wheelchair | TED Talk

When Sue Austin got a power wheelchair, she felt a tremendous sense of freedom -- yet others looked at her as though she had lost something. In her art, she conveys the spirit of wonder she feels wheeling through the world. Includes thrilling footage of an underwater wheelchair that lets her explore ocean beds, drifting through schools of fish, floating free in 360 degrees.
