Alumni News

Brianna Davey

On Thursday, the 4th of November, years 7, 8 and 9 attended an online session organised by the Middle School Executive, with guest speaker Brianna Davey. Brianna is an MGC alum, class of 2012, an AFLW player, as well an ex-Matilda. The session highlighted her recently received Best and Fairest Award for 2021 AFLW season and inspired the middle school students of MGC after another long lockdown.

Brianna is a stellar professional athlete, and she continues to inspire young women around pursuing their passions in sports, whilst also upholding another career. Bri is an excellent example of how possible that is, as she has won many awards in AFLW and earned a university degree in education. She left an impact on the importance of having a backup plan when one chooses professional sport as a career.

The Middle School Executive worked hard alongside Lori Perry, our school alumni program coordinator, to organise and host this event. Originally the session was going to be in-person, on the oval with an opportunity to kick the footy around. Unfortunately, due to numerous lockdowns and on-site restrictions, this event had to be hosted on Microsoft Teams, but we still got to keep the interactive part of the session; in addition to pre-prepared questions, Brianna also answered questions in real time from the 25 teachers and 650 students who attended.

The online session was very inspiring, and we would like to thank Brianna Davey for taking the time out of her busy schedule to talk to us!

Year 10 Work Experience Week

Work Experience Week is an opportunity for year 10 students to learn, firsthand, the positives and negatives of a job/industry. Unfortunately, for the last two years, WEW has been impacted by the covid pandemic and all the restrictions it caused. MGC invited three alumnae to join the year 10 cohort in a career pathway assembly to share insight into the fields of law, medicine, and fashion production/merchandising. If our students could not go out into the workforce, we would bring a small part of the workforce to them! Jesse Walsh, Gaby Capone and Courtney McKenzie joined a Microsoft Teams assembly, explained their education and career choices and answered questions from the Alumni Program Coordinator and students. Thank you, Jesse, Gaby and Courtney, for your time and enthusiasm – the year 10 teachers and students loved catching up with you!
