Bike Education
The Bike Education Program is designed for the use of students in Years 5 & 6, and enables the students to:
- Develop the physical and cognitive skills to manage the road traffic environment safely as a cyclist.
- Gain knowledge and an understanding of the road traffic environment and the road laws.
- Develop responsible behaviours, attitudes and decision making skills for the safe use of bicycles both on and off the road through participation in an enjoyable learning experience relevant to their ages and abilities.
The aim of Bicycle Education can best be described as a combination of cognitive and perceptual motor tasks. The following are 3 levels which have been identified to be covered in our program:
- Control level: Involves the basic perceptual motor skills necessary to ride a bike, such as maintaining balance and speed, steering straight and operating brakes and gears. These skills improve with age and practice.
- Manoeuvring level: involves decision making in the immediate traffic environment, such as deciding the appropriate action to make a right hand turn, negotiating a roundabout or avoiding obstacles. This level requires the cyclist to directly interact with the actual traffic environment.
- Strategic level: involves making decisions about certain aspects of a trip prior to its commencement. These decisions require forward planning and assessment of costs/risks versus the benefits of the trip. Children generally attain the capacity for abstract thinking around the age of 11 years and in the case of young cyclists such strategic tasks would be done on their behalf by an adult.
Inter-school Basketball
We are proud to announce that both the girls and boys basketball team made the grand finals. The girls team did really well during the whole season, they won every game, but unfortunately they lost to Tucker Road 18-14 in the grand final.
The boys team also did really well throughout the season. Their final game vs. Tucker Road was challenging but they managed to keep in front. Their efforts were rewarded with a grand final win, the score being 36-21. A special thank you goes to Ad Van Amrooy and Mrs Overell for coaching us.
