Shooting Success

Clay Target Shooting has commenced this term and we have already seen some great results achieved by our shooters.

The College has been well represented by approximately 20 of our students at the Coleraine Field & Game School Shoot and the South West Zone School Shoot at Noorat. It is great to see many new faces along with our experienced shooters being part of the team.

Well done and congratulations to Jorjia Farrugia and Shaun Roache who placed 2nd in the Girls’ Over 15 and Boys’ Over 15 categories respectively at the Coleraine Field and Game Shoot.

Last week also saw an outstanding result from Hamish Cameron at the South West Zone School Championships at Noorat. Hamish placed 1st in the Over 15 Boys’ category, against some very tough competition. Hamish scored rounds of 10/10 and 9/10 which landed him in a shoot-off for Overall High Gun Winner.

Hamish narrowly lost the shoot off but still achieved first in his age category. Hamish has qualified to compete at the State Championships in Echuca early in September. We wish him the best of luck.

Cricket at College

In Season 2018/2019 the College Cricket Club will be strongly represented in the various Hamilton District Cricket Leagues. In the HDJCA College will again field three teams in the Under 12 Boys’, one in the Under 14 Boys’ and one in the Under 16s’ competitions. In the HDWCA, College will field 1 team in the Under 13 Girls’, 2 in the Under 16 Girls’ and one team in the Open Women’s competition. In the HDCA Men’s A, C and D Grade teams will be fielded. It is exciting to see the growth of an additional senior men’s team while also retaining our junior numbers.

To all junior students on the Myrniong campus, a flyer has been sent home with details of the ‘Woolworths Junior Blasters’ programme. This programme is a rebranding of the Milo In 2 Cricket competition which has been running for a number of years.

All junior boys and junior girls who have intentions of playing cricket this year for College are required to complete the ‘Junior Registration Form’ and return it to Mr Mirtschin or Mr Alexander.  Senior students and parents wishing to play should contact us also to register their interest.

If there are any parents or students who wish to know more about cricket this upcoming season, please don’t hesitate to contact me via e-mail.

Girls' Hockey

A Grade

Thundersticks

The A Grade Thundersticks’ final home and away game would be one they would rather forget. The girls were defeated 2-1 by Monivae, a side that had not troubled them all season. A lethargic first half where nothing really went to plan meant the girls were playing catch up for the rest of the game. The girls showed greater spirit in the second half with Phoebe Sweeney slotting home a clever goal. Monivae scored again late in the game to secure the win. The Thundersticks cannot afford another game like this as they meet sister team College Strikers on Sunday for a Grand Final berth.

Better Players: Gracie Austin, Katie Budenberg.

College Strikers

The Strikers finished a perfect home and away season defeating Coleraine 13-0 to remain undefeated, a great effort indeed. This week the girls were focused on expanding their play across the width of the field which allowed plenty of space for Isabelle Musson to be one on one with the goalie and the highest scorer of the night. Nikita Cavill has been a huge improver this season and should be looking forward to her first ever round of A Grade finals. Olivia Allen also received a lot of the ball and set up some excellent scoring opportunities.

B Grade

College Blades met the College Scorchers last Wednesday. Hannah Russell was in charge of the Blades and Chloe Russell was coaching the Scorchers stepping in for her Dad! The Scorchers were too strong in a relatively even contest winning 2-0. The Blades certainly had their chances but could not get past the reliable Emily Ash in goals.

Better Players: Georgie Snodgrass, Jordy Brown, Lucy Roberts, Alyssa Hocking.

Boys' Hockey

The Division Two teams met last Saturday in a preview of this week’s Qualifying Final and it was a cracker of a game.  Blue ended up edging out Gold 4-3 with both teams playing some fine hockey and each having their moments of game-time dominance.

Harrison Hocking (2), Eren Zehir and Max Green gave Blue’s goals a decidedly Port Fairy tinge whilst Jock Adamson, Nick Gunn and Isaac Hocking scored for Gold.  Blue were missing the injured Ferg Roberts but Gold were without the services of Will Merrin.  I am reluctant to single out too many players for mention as everyone contributed positively to their team’s performance but the two stand-outs were Tane Nelson for Gold and Isaac Hocking for Blue.  If the teams can serve up as exciting an encounter this weekend (and hopefully again in a couple of weeks’ time), it will be worth travelling to watch.

The Open team scored a very good victory over Demons on Sunday night.  Conditions were quite different to the sunny warm day which greeted the Division Two boys but we warmed to our task well, creating movement and opportunity up forward and defending well.  Goals to Josh Read, Sami Zehir and Jonothan Lee created a 3-0 score-line.  Most pleasing was the composure and team-work shown in the creation of Josh’s and Jono’s goals; Sami’s was simply a gutsy, committed effort.  Those who caught the eye as better players (when there were many) included Reagan Simons, Tane Nelson and Josh Read.  Next task: play the same way in the Qualifying Final on Friday night!

Hockey News

Congratulations to Phoebe Russell and Isaac Hocking who have both been selected in the U13 State Hockey Sides. Phoebe and Isaac are both extremely dedicated and talented young players. They have both had to work very hard to gain selection through a number of trials. We wish them both all the success and look forward to hearing of their achievements in these sides.
