Student Leadership
On Wednesday, 18th April, 22 staff from Herbert Smith Freehills Global Law Firm (solicitors and legal advisers) attended the launch of the 2018 HSF Mentor Program at Brunswick Secondary College.
This 14 session program pairs twenty Year 9 students with twenty HSF staff members. Meetings are held fortnightly at their prestigious offices at 101, Collins Street, throughout Terms 2 and 3. These sessions include a range of activities designed to develop self-confidence, goal setting, interpersonal skills and to promote community involvement and team building skills.
The HSF Mentor Program is limited to 14 sessions and has strict guidelines of no communication or contact outside the set mentoring sessions.
Both students and HSF staff apply to be involved in the program, and from all reports over our 6-year involvement with the firm, both students and mentors are enriched by their participation in the program.

I enjoy meeting new people, finding out about their interests, sharing my own interests and bonding through this. This leads into a new opportunity of learning, where I interact with an person in a 1 to 1 situation, just talking and asking them questions. Since this opportunity is a new experience, it was hard at first to get to know my mentor, but as the meeting progressed it become more fun and more intriguing.

I am most looking forward to working with my mentor and obtaining skills that will help my personal development in the future. I am especially looking forward to the sessions on Goal Setting and CV Writing.
My mentor has told me that both the food and the view are great from the HSF offices on the 41st floor (!) and that the bowling session is good fun too.
