HOCKEY-DIVISION 5

College Hurricanes went down to Monivae Magic 3-1. The team was unlucky not to equalise on a number of occasions. Best for College were Ben Walker, Macey Hermon and Skye Headlam. Tyler Butcher scored the Hurricane’s goal.

Hockey – Division 4

College Rebels ran out 5-1 winners over College Chiefs. Rebels had the run of the play in the first half, and led 2-1 at the break. Chiefs had a 15 minute period of domination in the second half, but could not convert the pressure into goals. Hamish Boyd Walsh tried hard in attack, as did captain Archie Cameron, and Jorja Hermon in defence. Best for Rebels were Jack Wall, Ted Koch, Charlie Cameron and Charlotte Rowe.

College Crusaders made it back to the winner’s list with hard fought 3-0 win over Monivae. Goal scorers for College were Isabella Musson, Natalie Featherston and Will Merrin. Best for College were Rosie and Millie Dopheide, Will Merrin and Isabelle Musson.

BOYS’ HOCKEY

The two Under 16 teams recorded 5-2 victories last weekend.

Gold played the Barbarians and, once again, Coach Thomas Verco took the field to guide his charges against their older opponents.  After an even first half and then falling behind early in the second period, the boys finished full of running.  Zac Cunningham opened the scoring with a neat early goal and he added a second late in the game.  Dougal Sweeney also scored a brace, the second with a superb strike at a short corner, and Dylan Cunningham added the final goal to cap off a fine personal performance. The defence had to work and Darcy Wall, Taku Mahwendepi and Charlie Rivett each made a number of fine clearances; goalie Marcus Munro was called into action and remained alert.  Lachlan Armstrong provided effective on the half-line linking and providing run.  This was a very good performance from the team as they showed a continued development of the excellent team play they have exhibited recently.

Blue found themselves down at half-time to a much-improved Monivae team but they gained control in the second half with two quick goals turning the game around shortly after the break.  Ferg Roberts completed a neat hat-trick, being in excellent position to slot the ball into goals and demonstrating the importance of perseverance.  The boys had appeared frustrated at times in the first half: how quickly games of hockey can turn around when you focus on doing the simple things well!  Jack Green had scored the first goal with a clever deflection on the post from a Sami Zehir shot and Jonathan Lee, much to his own and all his team-mates’ delight, scored the final goal, Jono’s first ever hockey goal.  He looked keen to score another with a fierce attack on the ball several moments later!  It seemed as if Blue rediscovered their mojo in the second half and the Sutherland brothers, Tane Nelson and Charles Cain stood out in what became a very fine team performance.

Next week’s match-up of the two College teams once again excites great anticipation!

The Open men’s team, playing without a number of regulars who were at university Open Days, scored a fine 6-2 victory over Bulls.  This game was very tight until well into the second half when our run proved the difference.  Tom Verco ran himself into the ground and was a dominant and creative player – he also scored three goals!  Tom Bunge and Liam McMaugh, tireless runners also, each added a goal whilst Nick Lacey and Acting Captain Will Allen were steadfast and dependable, as was Andrew Robertson with a number of important intercepts and passes. Harry Musson had to play virtually the whole seventy minutes as his recovery continues and we were delighted to welcome Tane Nelson, who filled in for us at short notice and scored a delightful goal right at the end of the game.  Early on, Josh Cavill was called into action several times and remained alert in goals and our three “oldies worked hard also, so hard in one case meaning Mr Nelson will be limping all week!

The Open team has the bye next weekend.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY REPORT

DIVISION ONE WOMEN

The College Thundersticks recorded their best win of the season with an astonishing 16-1 victory over Demons. After a rusty start to the second half of the season, everything clicked on Sunday and the girls played simply brilliant hockey.  Emily Johnston was superb up forward scoring five goals and she was well supported by the very consistent Mrs Williams who put three past the goalie. The rest of the goals were well spread amongst the forwards with even the half line chipping in for three goals. The teamwork was the real highlight of this game with the ball shared amongst all players to set up numerous scoring opportunities. It is simply impossible to pick better players from this game as all 13 girls contributed to a memorable win.

The Thundersticks have the bye this weekend then will face Monivae in the final home and away game for the season.
