House Speeches

Tomorrow we will be entertained by students in Year 4 and 5 as they banter their way towards the House Public Speaking Cup. We have been wondering if Young House will win it for the third year in a row.  Lily Schroeder, Gabe Marshall and Libby Diprose will be doing their best to see that happen. Their topics are Chocolate, Living with my Brazilian Mum and How to Annoy Your Parents. Sally Aitken, Will Merrin and Luc Murphy form Berry House will be doing their best to help their team come out victorious. Information about Helen Keller, Bull Riding and Why I don’t like Swimming Lessons will be shared.  The students of Laidlaw House will talk about an American Holiday, The Olympics and Overcoming your Fears as Charlotte Rowe, Lachlan Rees and Olivia Mann take to the stage.  Learmonth House will be represented by Lily Bradbeer, for the second year in a row, Jock Barrie and Chantal Jackson. Their topics of Sugar, Basketball and Gross Things about Babies will leave the audience wanting to hear more.  It is exciting to see all but one of our speakers being first time finalists.  It just shows the quality of our public speaking skills. Right from Prep students are encouraged to speak in front of their peers, developing confidence for when they step up to a larger audience within their House, at Assembly or on the big stage like our finalists.

Taekwondo Success

Last weekend three of our budding Taekwondo students received belt promotions. This not only recognises their hard work at Taekwondo but also at school with their teachers signing off to let Muhktar know that they have being doing their best.  Sienna Lewis from Year 4 now has her green belt, Luke McQueen from Year One has a yellow belt and Harley Willis from Prep has his orange belt.  They should all be proud of their achievements.

Woolly West Fest Writing Competition

Naomi Turner, co-founder of Woolly West Fest visited our school today to present Sophie Merrin with an autographed copy of Sally Rippin’s book “The Big Book of Billie”.   An excited Sophie won First Prize for Year Three writers in Hamilton in the recent Woolly West Fest writing competition.  The competition was judged by Sally herself.

Pen Licences - Year 4

On Tuesday I visited the Year 4 classroom to present the first pen licences for the year. The students were very excited and couldn’t wait to be told who would be trading in their pencils.  I was most impressed with the genuine happiness the class showed for their peers when the presentations were made. We decided to announce them in class because we are not having Assembly for two weeks due to House Public Speaking and the Year 3 & 4 IPSHA Camp. The students will have their certificates formally presented at our next Assembly on Tuesday, 23rd August. In the meantime, they will be able to display consistently neat, well-formed handwriting as they complete writing tasks with a pen. The recipients are Chantal Jackson, Zoe Kennedy and Olivia Mann.  Congratulations girls!

Wellness Week

The KidsMatter team members visited Senior School to meet with their older counterparts and organise activities across the campuses to celebrate Wellness Week.  As a result, you are sure to hear about the wonderful things that will happen throughout the week to promote our wellbeing. We will conclude the week with a whole school lunch.  Junior School students have been invited to a BBQ lunch at MYPEC.  There will be no cost to students.

Red Cross Youth - Jeans for Genes Day

On Friday the 19th August we are celebrating Jeans for Genes Day.  Jeans for Genes Day supports children's medical research to give sick kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Did you know that 1 in 20 kids is born with a genetic disease? That's 1 in every classroom.

Wear your jeans to school on Friday the 19th of August and bring a gold coin donation to fight childhood disease.

Plus, if you raise $10 by asking your friends and family for support, you'll receive a Jeans for Genes Day prize pack which includes a keyring and badge:  Not only will they look great on you or your bag but you will also be showing the world how you’ve done your bit to help find cures for childhood diseases.

All you need to do is collect $10 from your friends and family to support Jeans for Genes Day. With an adult’s help, donate the money to our school’s fundraising page:

See you in your jeans on Friday the 19th of August.  Thank you J

Junior Netball

The Hamilton Netball Association is keen to finish 2016 with a Junior Netball Competition to be held on Saturday mornings.  For this to happen, they first need to form a new Junior Committee.  Please text your details to David Eastwood if you are willing to help. Our young people were very disappointed not to play in Term One, losing an opportunity that has been available to them for many years. They do not understand why they can’t do something they love.  If you could offer any help at all, you would be putting smiles on the faces of a lot of little people in our community. You don’t need to be a netballer yourself and any amount of assistance you can offer will help get children back on the court so please think about putting your hand up.  We all know that volunteers were asked for last year to run Term One and, without them, look what happened - empty courts on Saturday mornings and upset children. Please take the time to think about helping out.

Junior Basketball

Please note that U10 Boys Barn Owls will train on Tuesday nights from next week, Tuesday 16th August.  Please meet Ms Purcell at the Senior Campus Sports Centre after school.

*Refer to College Sporting Fixture for all sport draws.

Junior Campus Art

Olympics week has hit in the Junior School Art Room and it has been lots of fun! We got into the spirit by having a look at images from the opening ceremonies of the Rio Olympics as well as past Olympic games. The Piccinos created an amazing display of the Olympic rings as a collage of tissue paper and then keeping with the collage theme, the preps created an Australian flag and the Year 1s and 2s did collages of their favourite sports and associated apparatus. The Year 3s and 4s will endeavour to create their own Olympic medals. We have as many finished pieces as possible on display in the art room for Open Day, so hopefully we will have some positive feedback.
