WHY FIGHT MND!

In February this year, the day before I went to SLC camp, my family contacted me with horrible news.  My cousin-In-law’s brother (David) had been diagnosed with MND.  Being in a close family, this really affected me.  David not only has a beautiful wife, but two very little kids.

In case you don’t already know, MND stands for Motor Neurone Disease.  The name is given to a couple of diseases in which the nerve cells (or neurons) fail to work normally, which eventually results in death.

With no nerves to activate them, the muscles gradually weaken and waste. Neurons control the muscles that enable us to walk, speak, swallow and any other kind of movement including breathing.  This could happen to David!

At SLC camp (the day after I found out) I decided to nominate the charity Fight MND.  This charity is non-for profit and puts the funds directly into research for a possible cure for this disease.

In the 50,000 people diagnosed in any one year, roughly 60% of those are male, with two Australians dying of MND every day and a further two being diagnosed every day.  These figures are far too high.

So this is why I nominated the charity.  It’s why I’m writing this today. I am urging you to donate all the money you can to make this disease a thing of the past.  Thank you.

CASUAL DRESS DAY REFLECTION

On Friday 7 September we held the Term 3 Casual Dress Day.  We would like to thank everyone who helped out and supported the day.

We raised a wonderful amount with a total of $1969.45 for FightMND.

Founded in 2014, FightMND was established with the purpose of finding effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Motor Neurone Disease. The horrible and debilitating disease gradually takes away the patient’s use of their arms and legs, their ability to eat and swallow, their speech and ultimately their ability to breathe…all in an average timeframe of just 27 months.

Congratulations to 7E who donated $45 and 8D who donated a massive $53.10.

During the day we had many fun activities, including a bake sale and Sherrin footy raffle on both campuses which raised $471.80, as well as footy activities run by ex-AFL player Dean Rice (organised by Alex Fox - Year 9).

Congratulations to Max Oliver (Year 11) and Allira Reid (Year 7) who won the best dressed competition and Lucy Cripps (Year 11) who won the Sherrin Footy raffle.

RU OK Day

On Wednesday 12 September, the LEAD class of Semester 2, 2018 held a bake sale and raffle to raise awareness for the “R U OK? Day” charity. We are extremely pleased to announce that we raised over $700 with an $80 donation from The Little Olive coffee van.

The day ran smoothly and included a raffle for three “R U OK?” branded keep cups, with the three lucky winners being Ms Julie Bacon, Ms Chloe Stevens and Ms Kylie Williams.

Thank you to everyone who purchased from or supported the bake sale, as it would not have been such a success without you.

Please remember to ask your friends and family the simple question: “R U OK?”

Basketball

On 12 September our basketball team of International students played against McClelland Secondary College.  The captain was Justin Chen(Year 11) who organized the practices after school every Friday and the match against another school.  Also in the team were: Ray Tian (Year 12), Stephen Chen (Year 10), Kevin Xu (Year 11), Jerry Cheng (Year 11), Tony Liu (Year 11), Henry Huang (Year 11), Wilson Wang (Year 11), Limhour Kruoch (Year 11) and Barry Guo (Year 10).  All boys played extremely well and our International students played in the best spirit of the game; the referee from the Frankston Basketball Assoc commented that it was the best match she had ever refereed.  Congrats to our International students for their sportsmanship.
