Learning at St Columba's

PYP Approaches to Learning

Primary Years Programme, PYP, has five interrelated learning skills used to authentically teach students how to be independent learners.

These five skills and the associated sub-skills comprise the ‘Approaches to Learning’.

  • Social Skills
  • Research Skills
  • Thinking Skills
  • Communication Skills
  • Self-management Skills

Through the planning process, teachers set learning goals directly relating to these skills at the start of a unit of inquiry and provide opportunities for students to develop and apply these skills to all areas of their learning. This year you will notice these terms in your child’s unit of inquiry reports that relate to the skills your child was explicitly focussing on throughout that unit. As students progress from Prep to Year 6, they continue to grow and develop these five skills, embedding them into all areas of their learning.
