Nossal Athletics

Held on Monday 1 May was perhaps one of the most anticipated events on the Nossal calendar, for both students and teachers alike. Gathered at Casey Fields Stadium, our Nossal students were excited to display their athleticism, competing in as many events but also dressing up to show house spirit with their friends! House spirit was best exemplified by the Year 12 House Captains wearing their matching Teletubby outfits handmade with pipe cleaners and tutus.

Participation this year was outstanding as the final scores between the Houses only differed by a hundred points. All students displayed true Nossalonian spirit competing in a wide variety of events, helping run stalls and other fundraisers, whilst also supporting their friends from the side lines.

As per tradition, the SRC held our annual BBQ on Athletics Day, this year being in collaboration with the Nossal production team, together we raised over $1200! Sausages could be seen lining the stands from Phoenix to Garuda, which makes it safe to say that this was a massive hit!

Along with our SRC BBQ, there were so many more stalls and fundraisers from our own Nossal clubs, including Formation, NEST and Production, and here is a little bit more information about it;

Formation: Formation’s Face Painting Fundraiser stall on Athletics Carnival successfully raised over $100 for Share the Dignity, a local Australian Charity whose mission is "giving dignity to women, girls, and those who can menstruate." The Formation team specialised in painting various elements such as hearts, butterflies, and stars, in house colours to promote House spirit on the day. Most of us had no prior experience and this was an exciting opportunity to try our hand at something new. Our volunteers enthusiastically put in their best efforts to create cute designs on the students.

NEST: During the 2023 Athletics Carnival, NEST ran a stall to promote environmental sustainability. NEST, formally known as the Nossal Environmental and Sustainability Team, is a club at Nossal that engages the school community with waste reduction, green initiatives and energy conservation. With the active participation of our members and the help of teachers, we successfully set up a soft drink stand and sold various types of drinks throughout the day. We were fortunate to sell out completely, generating over $400 in revenue. All proceeds from this day will be donated to the Australian Marine Conservation Society, a charity formed by a group of scientists and ocean conservationists dedicated to taking action to protect marine life. They advocate for science-based solutions and work closely with research centres globally. Overall, this was an incredibly successful day for the club, enabling us to achieve our goals of promoting environmental causes while providing our members with an opportunity to make a positive impact.

Production: The “Hair Affair” stall is inspired by Nossal’s production coming soon this year. The day began with the stall set up and learning the ropes of hair spraying, braiding, and attracting our fellow Nossalonian’s. Rays of light shone above our stall as people slowly filed in, some wanting green hair, fish braids or an adorable accessory. From our various house themed hair accessories and hair designs, many came in support for their Houses. Being a Year 9 at Nossal, the “Hair Affair” stall was such an exciting and fun experience, making my first Athletics Carnival one to remember!

A big thank you to Ms Tchantcho and Ms Webster, alongside all students who contributed to the stall, we couldn’t have done without you guys 😊

And to top everything off, the 4x100m relay sprints that ended the day stole the show. Students gathered on the side-lines and watched in great anticipation in the stands, as their friends and classmates competed for victory. Concluding the carnival, the results were announced to the school, leaving everyone shocked and a particular House ecstatic. The rising star of this year, Garuda, won first place with 1309 points! Congrats Garuda! And well done to all the other houses for giving it your all!
