Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

How can we already be in week 3! What an eventful couple of weeks it has been for the preps as they settle back into another term of learning. The preps have all come back from their break eager to learn, which has been great to see.

In Literacy, it has been an exciting couple of weeks learning about the Author - Aaron Blabey and have been reading the texts - Thelma the Unicorn, Pig the Pug series and I need a hug. They have been doing a range of activities that relate to the texts that have been explored. Students have been engaged in the sound explorations during Phonics time on the letters J and V. Ask your child to tell you some words that they’ve learned that begin with the sounds they’ve learned this week!

During Maths, the students have been learning about number sequences and the numbers that go before and after a number and put them into the correct sequence. Students then created their own number line and matched quantities to their numeral. Students then looked at the days of the week by putting them in order, discussing what is a weekend and a weekday and identifying what are days within the week.

In Religion, it has been an eventful time as the students have been learning about Jesus’ Resurrection and have used what they’ve learned to reenact their understanding through Godly Play. Created their own puppets about the resurrection of Jesus’ and presented their interpretation of the story to their peers. Students have also been exploring their own culture and the various elements such as food, celebrations that are significant to their cultures, cultural dress and all the things that make them who they're.

Learning Centre Two

Welcome to Week 3 of Term 2 in Learning Centre 2!

This week, we have focused our attention on the very special women in our lives as Mother's Day approaches. Our Writing lessons began with writing and designing invitations to the OLSC Mother's Day Morning Tea. The students have also written some beautifully heartfelt messages and have tried extremely hard to ensure their words express the love and gratitude they feel towards their mums. These words were transferred onto Shrinkies and made into keepsakes.

In Visual Arts, the children have also been working hard on creative pieces for their mums. We think you'll agree that they are spectacular!

Maths lessons have focused on the area of Chance this past fortnight. Students have been busy flipping coins, creating spinners and predicting which coloured Smartie would be pulled out of the bag. They have been using tally marks, whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages to describe the outcomes of their chance experiments.

Just today, students worked in groups to find the total number of flavour combinations when given 10 ice cream flavours to choose from and a double-scoop cone. They collaborated on posters that represented their learning around this task.

Last week, some of our 5/6 students represented OLSC at the District Cross Country. We couldn't be prouder of the way they showed respect for others and resilience as they navigated the lengthy and exhausting track.

Finally, here are some photos of our hockey team at training this week. All of our students are preparing for the Winter Lightning Prem sports day on Friday 2nd June. Don't forget to return your permission form ASAP so that you can attend on the day!

Learning Centre Three

The last couple of weeks have been very exciting in LC3! Everyone is excited to be visiting Fairy Park next Thursday. Please remember to send your child in full school uniform (runners can be worn), labelled lunch in a plastic bag and a drink bottle.

In Reading, we have been looking at a variety of different fairy tales. We have been making text-to-self connections as well as text-to-text connections. These have assisted us in writing, where we have been learning about nouns.

In Maths, we have been focusing on data. We have been coming up with questions that we can ask our peers. To help keep track of our answers, we have been using tally marks to assist us. We have used this data to create our very own pictograph.

In Inquiry, we have been looking at the difference between hardware and software. To help us understand this better, we have been using our devices to explore the different types of hardware and software which have been produced over the years.

In Religion, we have been looking at prayer and what prayer is. We have explored different types of prayer such as a prayer of petition and a prayer of thanks. Additionally, we have been learning about celebrations and the things we celebrate all around the world - birthdays, Christmas, easter etc.

In Wellbeing, we have been looking at personal space and learning about why it is important to keep our hands and feet to ourselves. It is important to show personal space to our peers and respect their own personal bubble.

Learning Centre Four

Life is busy in Learning Centre 4 - This Wednesday we had a visit from a scientist Dr. Lorien Parker from SciencePlay Kids. Our students used sensory and creative components of learning to reinforce their STEM curriculum. In partnership with A West Gate Kids program students learnt about electricity in our Environment and closing the loop with electrical circuits. They had fun dressing up as a scientist in their white lab coats and safety glasses.

In literacy the students have been working with procedure text. They have visualised and applied their knowledge to create a paper chatterbox.

The students are recording the steps for the procedure text and are using precise vocabulary.
