Principal's Chat

Term 2, Week 3 - Friday 14th May, 2023

Good afternoon OLSC families

On behalf of the whole community, I wish the mums, grandmothers, aunties and special people that support us all a very happy Mother's Day!  I sincerely hope that you are all spoilt and at the very least get some time to put your feet up!

My suggestion to the dads and students of OLSC is that a slice of toast and a cup of tea served in bed is a good start.

Thank you to all of the mothers and grandmothers that were able to attend our Mother's Day Liturgy yesterday and stay for a shared morning tea.  A couple of mums told me as they left that it was great to connect and that they made some new friends.  Thank you to John for organising the liturgy and to the Parents and Friends for the morning tea and the coffee van.

There was some confusion regarding the coffee van and some parents were charged for their coffee.  We had planned for this to be a gift from the school and the Parents and Friends Committee so please email me and I am happy to reimburse those charged for a coffee.  jhilton@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au

Engagement Congratulations

Bianca from 1/2 Orange has shared some good news that she is engaged.  I am sure you all join me in congratulating Bianca and Mark and wish them well.

Terri Campbell's Visit

Last week, our friend Terri Campbell returned to OLSC to work with students and teachers across all levels of the school. While she was here, the focus was on strategies to improve the ways we instruct and guide students during writing sessions. The children in Marilyn's 1/2 class participated in a language experience where they created fairy tale scenes with stickers and mini-figures. They told their story to a friend and then had a go at writing their words down.

The students in Emma's 3/4 class and Alexandra's 5/6 class worked on writing to instruct. Their focus was on the specific words they chose to use when explaining their instructions to an audience. The 3/4s watched a video to make a chatterbox and the 5/6 students used picture instructions and mini bricks to build animals.

The Prep teaching team spent some time with Terri planning opportunities for the prep students to read stories, practice their reading skills and retell the stories through speech and writing.

School Athletics Carnival - Please Join Us!

On Friday 19th May we have the whole school athletics carnival.  This is always one of my favourite events and I encourage anyone that is able to join us to come along.  If you are able to help out with events (marshalling students, measuring, timing etc) please email our Physical Education specialist, Michelle.  Michelle's email is mgilbert@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au

If you attending as an official helper you must have a current Working With Children Check.

We'd Like to Hear Your Thoughts

On Thursday 25th May we are holding a Community Conversation and we would like to hear ideas in an informal setting.  Please see the Wellbeing section of the newsletter for more information.

Colour Run

On Friday June 9th we are having our school Colour Run.  Students are able to register via the website, if they have not already done so, and fliers were sent home in week 1.  There has already been quite a bit of money raised!!

Junior Footy Opportunity

Manor Lakes Storm are still recruiting junior players.  This is a great opportunity to get children involved in sport and establish links with other sin the community beyond the school gates.  One of our Dad's from OLSC, Shaun Lewis is coaching and would love to see more students getting involved.  Details are below.

Once again wishing all of the mothers, grandmothers and special people in our community an awesome Mother's day.  I hope this Sunday is an opportunity to spend quality time with family.  Happy Mother's day.

Have a great weekend, stay safe and see you all next week.
