Literacy & Numeracy Week Assembly

National Literacy and Numeracy week was celebrated around Australia. Concord School took part in read for Australia. This activity was to promote reading around Australia through schools and the wider community. Like all schools in Australia we read Banjo and Ruby Red at the Primary level and this year we made sure our Secondary students were equally catered for by reading The Stone Lion. Listening to the students take on the texts was amazing and it really supported how much they had learned about reading strategies throughout the year. Zac P in SKH spoke to me about the language in The Stone Lion accurately describing some of the language features as simile’s.

For Mathematics, students around the school used art to depict their understandings. The introduction of the trihexaflexagon was the talk of the town during that week. We also discovered how Math’s can be used to solve everyday problems with the ‘Getting the Message’ component of the Literacy and Numeracy week’s festivities.

Finally it is worth noting that although we spend five sessions working on Numeracy and ten sessions working on Literacy during every week, it is always fun to engage in activities that are being focussed on in every other school around Australia. These events allow our students to discuss with siblings and external friends how they have been working at school and the successes that they have had during this time. I am so proud of all the students for their involvement during Literacy and Numeracy week and our staff for giving the students such wonderful experiences.

Banyule City Council

Over term 3 we built a stronger relationship with the Banyule City Council. This was highlighted when we hosted Tom Melican a Councillor from the Banyule City Council as part of the council’s 'Principal for a Day' program.  Tom was very impressed with the school and the programs we offer. We held a special SRC meeting where he spoke to the students about how the council works and he acknowledged the achievements of the SRC this year.

Tom was already familiar with the school through the ‘WORK INSPIRATIONS PROGRAM’  at the council. Two of our students, Alex and Hassan took part in this exciting new week long program which gave them an insight into the many and varied jobs and other opportunities within a municipal council.

During that week our students:

·  Had an introduction to Ivanhoe office , OHS   procedures and how the council runs.

·  Visited  Morobe Children’s Centre and read   to children.

·  Visited an Aged Care Centre and assisted with activities.

·  Visited the Operations Depot and Transfer   Station and had a tour of the Ivanhoe      Aquatic Centre.

·  Completed filing and mailing work with the     Records Department at Ivanhoe            office.

·  Had a corporate bus tour to Watermarc to     view facilities and have  lunch, then       to Greensborough Council Office Customer Service, the Building Surveying              Team, a visit to JETS and RETHINK environmental centre and finally to the                Bushland Team at Wilson Reserve.

The last 2 days were spent on work placement with Parks Depot and Nursery. Gaynor Martyn our Careers and Transition Coordinator  supported the students in this program.
