St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal

Help us give people in need another choice this winter!

When you can’t afford to pay your rent, do you risk falling deeper into debt, or do you face sleeping on the street? When you can’t afford to pay your energy bill, do you and your family decide to freeze in a cold home or to go hungry?

Every day in Australia, someone faces impossible choices like these.  Over 116,000 women, children and men are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness on any given night in Australia. It’s easy to forget that people struggling to make ends meet are people just like us.

Our St Philomena's School Mini Vinnies and Secondary SVDP Chapters are committed to making a difference in our local community. We rely on generous donations from our school community to support our local community through the Winter Appeal.

To begin our Winter Appeal we are inviting students to wear blue and white on Friday 22nd June and bring a gold coin donation.  At morning tea we will be taping teachers to the wall! For $2 students can buy a length of tape to tape a teacher, with all funds raised going directly to Moree SVDP.

Year of Youth Cross

The Year of Youth Cross was officially commissioned at the Catholic Schools Week Mass on 29th May 2018 in Armidale. It is now travelling in pilgrimage to each of our schools as a focus for prayer, discussion and reflection on the Year of Youth in local Catholic school communities.

Students from K-10 spent the week gazing at the Cross and hearing about the significance of the symbols.

The Year of Youth Cross reflects the rural context of the Diocese of Armidale and was designed and made by Frank Patricks, a teacher from McCarthy Catholic College in Tamworth.

The design embodies the feel of the Australian bush and the sense of spirituality that is intrinsic within the Australian flora and fauna. These design elements celebrate a truly Australian Church that links us with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters as well as the Universal Church, highlighting how all things are interrelated including Indigenous Christian spirituality with our own traditional Catholic spirituality.  The cross has sensor lights embedded within which illuminate as the cross is approached, reminding us that as we move close to Christ, the light of Christ will lead the way.

Year 12 McCarthy Catholic College Student, Olivia Clarke, wrote our Year of Youth Prayer.

Lord,

In this year of youth, be with young people as they strive to do your work. Guide them, to follow Jesus’ example of compassion and mercy.

Help the youth to reach out to those in need in our schools, families and in our global communities. Lead young people to peaceful solutions in conflict, to forgive and to make choices that reflect your love.

May your Church continue to share the joy of your Gospel with all people.

Amen.

Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Help of Christians, pray for us.

St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, friend of the young, pray for us.
