Deterring Students from Sitting their VCE Exams
Over the last couple of weeks there have been media reports claiming that independent and government schools, in their quest to maintain high academic results and in turn their reputation, have been deterring less able students from sitting their VCE exams and thus compromising their student’s interests. Just last week at a Kilvonian alumni gathering, a past student directly asked me whether Kilvington has such a policy.
As you are aware, a key Kilvington pillar is ‘care’. The wellbeing of our students is central to all we do; it is top priority. So do we deter students from sitting their VCE exams? I can emphatically say, ‘No we don’t’. And I trust in my Principalship we never will. Indeed we have an outstanding record of supporting students - both academically able and less able - through their VCE. For me, if a student is struggling with their studies, but there is good reason to for him/her to stay, even if that might mean a low score, so be it. Student wellbeing has to come first no matter the situation.
We are All Equal
I saw the film Hidden Figures this week. It is certainly worth seeing. It celebrates the achievements of women, black women, who make a stand against terrible racial and gender discrimination, working diligently behind the scenes, to assist America to put their first astronaut into space.
This week we celebrated International Women’s Day. It is a day set aside to reflect on the achievements of women, and to remind us that we are all equal. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, male nor female, as the Good Book says.
