Teaching and Learning

Teaching and Learning with Ms Barnett

Hello families!

We are in full swing of teaching and learning this term. It is wonderful to see our classroom routines and rituals underway and our students working hard to achieve their new learning goals.

Home reading is now up and running. Students will be coming home with their satchels, home reading texts and diaries each night and we ask that reading and recording reading in student diaries becomes part of your after school regime. Classrooms have set tubs or spaces for diaries and satchels, so that teachers can monitor student progress, checking diaries regularly. Do not hesitate to use the diary to communicate with your child's teacher.

As students progress through the school, home reading can look different. In the Foundation and Junior School, students will predominantly be bringing home decodable texts and short chapter books as required. Moving into the Middle and Senior School students will read a mix of decodable texts, short stories and chapter books from classroom libraries, as well as digital fiction and nonfiction texts through EPIC and Kids News.

On Wednesday students will bring home their mCLASS report. Our mCLASS Benchmark assessments are a diagnostic tool that informs teachers how to target support for students. They are in no way aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and so please do not panic if an area of the report is marked as Well Below or Below, as this supports teachers being explicit in their reading instruction for your child. The report informs you of where your child needs support. The report also gives examples of games and activities that would be suitable for your child and a link to mCLASS Home Connect.

Happy home reading!
