The Importance of Routines
Hi Families,
Over the first four weeks of the term, we have focused on establishing and practicing routines with our students.
Prior to our students returning for the 2023 school year, all staff spent time learning about the importance of establishing clear routines that cover all aspects of our student’s time at school.
What we know is that student routines are key to the success of most classroom outcomes. What we call routines is actually a combination of an enormous number of habits, attitudes and skills that adults frequently take for granted. None of these factors are innate, and they must be taught.
The tricky part? Students vary enormously in these capacities due to their histories and circumstances.
Our teachers have worked tirelessly, getting to know their students and not assuming that all students are equally capable of following classroom routines.
The key point our teachers have focused on is that routines must be taught. The habits and skills that contribute to successful class behaviour must be explicitly taught.
Whilst these routines were introduced during our Learning to Learn program (week 1 of the term), it has been wonderful to spend time in classroom and to observe teachers re-teaching these routines as needed to ensure every student is aware of the expectations.
