College Updates

Seussical Jr.

Lowanna student once again excelled themselves in their performance of Seussical the Musical Jnr.

40 students from across the College worked for 17 weeks after school to rehearse, refine and perform this most wonderful of musicals. The cast worked with exceptional diligence and their performances went from strength to strength. We performed 5 shows across the week and over 1,200 people saw the performance, what a great tribute to the work of the cast.

It was an honour and thrill to see and hear the cast develop over the 17 weeks and the staff involved were continually amazed at how the cast embraced the process.

Thanks to all the staff who helped and to Mr Graeme Nicholls for his work in directing the production.

Another successful performance and we look forward now to 2020.

Outdoor Education

As term 3 draws to a close, we can reflect on what a busy term this has been for all students and staff involved with the Outdoor Education classes.

Our year 9 students have now completed their Jump and Climb program, culminating with an indoor climbing experience at Hardrock Climbing Gym in Nunawading. Throughout the term students have learnt about all things relating to trampolining and rock climbing, using the 4 practical experiences to support their studies. Next term, year 9’s will begin the Bike Education program.

Mountain Biking has been the topic of discussion for the 35 year 10 students completing year 10 Outdoor Education. For each group, a day trip to Erica Mountain Bike Park and Lysterfield Park has defiantly upskilled each student, ready for their overnight camp to Blores Hill, near Heyfield in the coming days. Endless information around safety using mountain bikes, bike parts, maintenance, helmets, dehydration, riding skills and researching our destinations, just to name a few, has kept all students very busy. As the weather fines up next term, expect to see our students take to the water, marking the beginning of the canoe program.

Unit 2 and 4 content in Outdoor and Environmental Studies was further reinforced for students as they attended 2-night experiences to Rubicon Outdoor Centre, Nayook and Mount Baw Baw. While the key aim was to investigate characteristics of outdoor environments, students had the opportunity to participate in multiple physical experiences. Snow Shoeing, Canopy Quests (High Ropes), Bush Walking to Toorongo Falls, Skiing and Snowboarding were some of the activities used to support their classwork and SACs. Environmental talks and study session also took place for both experiences.

We would like to wish all year 11 and 12 students the best of luck for their upcoming exams. Remember- preparation is key. Continue to complete practice exams and remember, your teachers are always there to help!

Primary School Sports Day

On Friday the 6th of September, the Year 10 Sport and Recreation classes held a Primary School Sports Day as part of their Term 3 assessment.

The students had to organise the whole day themselves from the transport to the activities ran on the day.

Seven local primary school's attended and participated in a modified European Handball Tournament.

The day ran smoothly and the local primary school students had a great day!

NBL Visits

Last week our students were lucky enough to have some players from the South East Melbourne Phoenix NBL team come and run a clinic with the year 9/10 Sports Excellence Basketballers. This focused on defence and shooting.

The Brisbane Bullets NBL team also came to run a clinic for the Year 8 Sports Excellence Class where they learnt ball handling skills and strategies to be able to score.

Both classes had heaps of fun and learnt a lot of new things. We are very thankful to both teams for coming down and running the clinics.

Gippsland Maths Challenge Day

On Wednesday the 14th of August, a group of 6 Year 9 students travelled to Federation University’s Gippsland campus in Churchill to participate in the Gippsland Maths Challenge. Our students competed against several schools across Gippsland, with each school fielding one or two teams of four students. As we had two extra students, they were asked to join with teams from other schools who were one student short of a complete team. These two students received special recognition for this on the day, and both Bailey Stell and Trent Zealley should be applauded for their excellent attitudes and good sportsmanship. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm in our students engaging in mathematics with students from across the region. Though the day was won by the team from Wonthaggi Secondary College, our team put forward their best efforts all day and had lots of fun.
