Sports Excellence Program

As part of their involvement in the 2019 Year 5-8 Sports Excellence Program students who are in their second or third year of the program are currently completing a Functional Movement Screen (FMS) under the guidance of Girton Grammar Head of Athletic Development Mr Jamie Tarrant and 3rd Year Exercise Physiology students from LaTrobe University. This testing is designed to highlight any movement disfunction that a student may have, which is critical to consider when exercise programming. If it is deemed that a student has some movement deficiency or weak area, using the information gathered, we can provide suggested corrective exercises which will improve the athlete’s movement efficiency, and thus allow us to safely introduce them to strength and conditioning training. Two of our key statements in the SEP are that students must “first move well, then move often”, and “we will not add strength to disfunction”. This testing allows us to identify how each athlete can move better and whether they have the movement literacy to begin adding strength. If is deemed that the athlete is indeed “moving well”, we know that we can safely proceed increasing the exercise intensity and the load that the student is placed under.

In the final week of Term 4 (2018), 9 students from Year 7 and 8 were selected to attend the Australian School Basketball Championships in Melbourne. The elite school tournament, that had previously seen players such as Dante Exum, Lauren Jackson and Patty Mills compete, consisted of 174 teams with over 2000 athletes from Australia and New Zealand.

The week-long championships began with a 3X3 Hustle tournament, providing schools the opportunity to contest for qualification to the national Big Hustle tournament in Geelong in 2019. Girton Grammar students Martin Steen, Patrick Byrne, Joshua Smith and Hamish Walker combined to play against Endeavour Sports High School, Sydney. It was the first time these students played in this style of competition and they demonstrated we were ready for the championships, by winning the best-of-three tournament. We would like to wish these students good luck on the national stage in April this year.

For the first three days of the championships the boys competed in four games, attempting to finish in the highest position at the end of the group stage. Our students were exposed to basketball of the highest calibre from the very first game. After a bad start, some extremely competitive and close matches and our hopes for a podium finish riding on the final game of the group stage, we ground it out to finish third with 2 wins and 2 losses, giving us an opportunity for a medal.

We approached our first final against Aquinas College (Ringwood) with confidence, after improving considerably throughout our previous four matches. The boys took a 10-point lead into half time but as all great teams do, Aquinas challenged us in the final half and took the lead with under 2 minutes to play, eventually winning the game 42-37. Despite narrowly missing out on a medal match, the future of Girton Basketball looks very bright as these bottom aged students demonstrated their abilities to match with the best. Every student on our roster hit the scoreboard*, they all developed significantly as basketballers and they formed friendships with each other and with students from schools across Australia.

I would like to thank and congratulate Martin Steen, Alex Carr, Charlie Whitsed, Nash Dignan, Will Hamilton, Patrick Byrne, Hamish Walker, Joshua Smith and Aiden Clemmens* (injured), for the exceptional way in which they participated throughout the tournament. Their sportsmanship, attitude and behaviour were impeccable, and I am immensely proud of the way they represented Girton Grammar School. I would also like to thank Deirdre Tunzi for the considerable amount of organisation that went into preparing for the tournament, Matthew James for his support and safe transportation of our students and to Ben and Kirstie Harvey for their support and encouragement to provide an unforgettable opportunity to our students. Thank you also to the families of the students involved for their support which without, none of this would be possible. We look forward to competing again this year and hope to extend our involvement at the 2019 Australian School Championships.
