In2Science eMentoring Program:

For students who enjoy Science and/or would like to explore the possibilities in studying Science, there is an excellent opportunity in the In2Science eMentoring Program.

This is a 10 week program that involves students at Maffra SC regularly connecting (via a video conference link) with a University student studying Science. The program has been running at Maffra SC for over 5 years, and many students have benefitted by gaining insights into what studying science at university is like; by discussing their science interests and/or schoolwork; by learning study tips and by improving their communication skills.

We have had students connect with university students studying in a variety of STEM fields, including: Forensic Science, Psychology, Environmental science, Biomedicine, Neurobiology, Engineering, Robotics and Coding, Physics, Vet Science, Health Science and Genetics.

If you or your child is interested in participating in the program for Semester 1, please contact Kristen Raine kristen.raine@education.vic.gov.au

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

As part of International day of Women and Girls in Science, a group of students from Years 7 to 10 attended the Royal Women’s Hospital “Meet a Scientist” live-stream event.

Students heard from four research scientists that work at the Royal Women’s Hospital in the fields of Reproductive Biology, Paediatric Physiotherapy, and Midwifery and Neonatal medicine. Students learnt about research and clinical studies that are improving outcomes for pre-term babies, and indigenous mothers and babies. During a Q & A session, students learnt that resilience is a theme for women in science. That it is okay to take your time through degrees and career pathways; it is not a race. The greatest advice they received was that your ATAR is important, but it is not everything. Students were encouraged to “find something you are passionate about and surround yourselves with like-minded people.”
