Uniform Reminders and Update

With the beginning of 2021 only a week old it is pleasing to say that we have had a number of students who have taken up the offer of wearing the school trousers and emblemed shirt as the alternative to the summer dress. These trousers were introduced in 2020 for the first time.

The trousers/shirt combination looks very smart, and the girls who have taken up the option have commented on how comfortable and cool the trousers are.

Our uniform supplier, Noone, have returned to the Uniform Shop at Marian to cater for the needs of our students and families but they also have their Hoppers Crossing and Niddrie Offices oped as well for your convenience.

We feel that as we approach the cooler months of the year that we will have many more students who will take up the option of trousers/shirt combination.

We remind students of the uniform expectations in relation to the wearing of Health and PE uniform and the requirements in relation to aspects of personal grooming such as hair colours, nails and jewellery.

Our Year Level Leaders will continue to monitor the appropriate wearing of the uniform and we remind families that students who continually push the boundaries may result in further follow.

Our student leadership team will carry out a review of the other parts of the school uniform over the course of this year. We look forward to keeping you informed of our progress.

Mobile Phone Update

As we return to the school in the normal manner we remind our community of the changes that we made to the use of mobile phones at the beginning of 2020 that continues to be part of our Mobile Phone Policy for 2021.

We remind all of our families  that  from the time students enter the school grounds until the end of the school day mobile devices need to be locked away in lockers and not visible. If they are seen by a member of staff they will be confiscated.

Due to the fact that the Year 9/10 students have no lockers available at the moment they have permission to leave them in their bags but, as with other year levels, not visible at all throughout the day.

If a student has their device removed for the first time they will be able to collect it at the end of the day from student reception where they will sign for collection of the device.

If a student has their device removed for the second time they will be able to collect it at the end of the day from student reception where they will sign for the collection of the device and they will be given a 30 minute restorative conversation regarding why they were using their mobile device.

If there is a third occasion that a device is removed the device will be returned only to a parent or emergency contact and a conversation will take place with the family. Students will also be issued with a 60 minute restorative conversation regarding why they are using their mobile device.

A letter will be sent to all families reminding you of this process after the information evenings have taken place.

We will keep you informed of how this process is working in coming editions of the Marian and we look forward to the week when we have no need to confiscate any devices.

Leadership Process Update

At the end of February we have our annual Investiture Assembly where we present all of our elected student leaders for 2021 with their leadership badges.

At the end of last year, we elected our Lamp Bearers, Student Representative Council and our House Captains for Years 8-12.

Over the coming weeks the new Year 7 cohort will elect their leaders and all of the Homeroom groups and Senior part of the school will elect their Student Participation Group members as well as the leaders of our many co-curricular groups such as Science Club and Library Monitors.

We look forward to informing our community of all student leaders in the Marian News after the Investiture Assembly.

Face Masks

A reminder that all students are expected to wear a face mask at all times (except when eating or drinking) and it must be worn correctly, covering the nose and mouth. Below are our protocols and some points around wearing a face mask in warmer weather:

  • For consistency, at Marian College staff and students will be required to wear a face mask in classrooms, corridors, and locker areas.
  • Face masks to be worn by individuals 12 and over when on public transport and school buses – unless you have a lawful exemption
  • Individuals 12 and over must carry a face mask at all times.
  • A face mask must cover the nose and mouth. Face shields, scarves, or bandanas do not meet these requirements.

Face masks and hot weather

It is important to follow the Chief Health Officer’s directions on wearing face masks, and there are steps that can be taken to improve comfort during warmer weather:

  • Keep hydrated with water
  • Use a single-use mask, or a reusable face mask made from 100 percent cotton, for increased breathability
  • Wash your reusable mask frequently to maintain effectiveness and bring a spare so you can change your mask if it gets damp or wet
  • Take mask breaks throughout the day when outdoors and physical distancing is possible.

We need to ensure that we are all playing our part in keeping everyone safe.
