Year 9 Marysville Camp

This year, our Year  9 students enjoyed a 4-day camp to Marysville in the final weeks of Term 4. They set off from school on the morning of Tuesday December 8, and after a 4½-

hour trip though the Rainforest, they stopped at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery, and then onto the cabins at Camp Marysville.

Staff and students had the privilege to be involved in a cultural talk with Aunty about the history of her People, who are the First Nations People of the Taungurung Country. They had the opportunity to tour the garden, sharing knowledge of plants, and what they are used for in Indigenous cooking. The students then cooked Warrigal Greens and Pigface, and enjoyed eating their creations.

On Wednesday everyone completed a massive 16km hike with

their loaded backpacks, and gaiters on to protect from snakes. A highlight of the day was stopping at Stevenson’s Falls afterwards, and taking in its breathtaking natural beauty. They arrived at the camp and set up tents, and then the students cooked broccoli and semi-dried tomato pasta, which tasted delicious. The students all slept out rough on rubber mats with no pillows after their gruelling, but very rewarding day.

Thursday began with an early 6am start, and everyone packed up tents and gear, and filled up on a nutritious breakfast before walking 4km back to the main camp.

To continue the journey, the chosen mode of transport was mountain bikes for the remaining 10km through the forest, finishing up with rock climbing and abseiling. For their last night they relaxed with a fun movie night, before packing up and heading home the next day.
