Pedal Cinema 2021

On the 27th of February, MGC held the annual 2021 Pedal Powered Cinema, showcasing the amazing movie, Zootopia. The pedal cinema started off with a small shower in the morning as our hardworking enviro team representatives and teacher were putting up the never budging screen, heavy batteries, bikes and marquees. Throughout the whole day we had all of the young and enthusiastic year 8's pedalling as hard as they could for 5 mins each. In order to get the year 8's excited about pedalling, we decided to give the most powerful peddler a Lush pamper pack (pictured), a trophy and of course BRAGGING RIGHTS! Our most powerful pedaller was Bridie Walsh from 8H with a whopping 6.0watt hours pedalled in 5 minutes!
During lunch, we had our annual teacher vs student race, with a year 12 student team led by Saskia Junge plus a fit team of teachers led by Mr Monaghan pedalling hard to create a boost to our energy production chart. Incidentally, do you know WATT the difference between power and energy is?
After an epic battle of the cranks, the year 12s had out cycled the peloton of teachers and won the race! At the end of the day, the year 8's had peddled...drumroll pleaseee!!! 675.8 watt hours!!! This amazing amount of energy helped power our cinema which was held in the evening, amongst a vibrant and lively community, despite the infamous covid-19. There were a vast array of stalls, consisting of different sustainable and environmental organisations, and some of our very own clubs, showcasing their amazing talents. Many great speeches were given, including students from the School Strike 4 Climate, Cr Ngyuen from the City of Yarra, former students from ‘Peacock Speaks’ and our own principal, Ms Jackie Knight which gave important insights into different areas of environmentalism and the activities occurring within our wider community. The movie this year, Zootopia, went off without a hitch, although it did consume 888.9 watt hours to project (It was lucky that all our visitors kept those pedals spinning through the night!)
We hope that everyone enjoyed it and took it as a chance to spend time with friends and appreciate the power of renewable energy! We would like to thank everyone who was involved in any way shape or form, from the City of Yarra to the volunteers, teachers, students and those from external organisations who made this event possible and be as successful as it was.
