Around The Primary

Dear Parents,

Many thanks to parents for following the COVID safe guidelines when dropping off and picking up your children. As usual, the students, parents and staff of our school community modify and adapt to all situations with a great sense of optimism and cheerfulness.

We will continue to be responsive to further announcements as they are made by the WA Government and Catholic Education WA. Our Mother’s Day celebrations will go ahead as scheduled for Friday 7 May and we kindly request only 1 adult per family attend this event.  Please RSVP by Monday 3 May -  2021 Mother's Day Celebration | TryBooking Australia

We also look forward to seeing Kindy parents at the Occupational Therapy workshop next Thursday 6 May in the Exhibition Centre. Please RSVP to nancy.petsos@cewa.edu.au by Monday 3 May if you are attending.

As I walk around the Primary school each day, I am pleased to see the students wearing their uniforms so smartly.  Thank you, parents, for supporting us in ensuring our students are smartly presented at school each day.  Parents are reminded that the Uniform Shop is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 12 noon, should additional items be required.

The greatest joy we have as staff is the interactions we have with our students. They are so full of optimism and positivity and we continue to be reminded everyday just what a lovely community we have at John XXIII College.

Kind regards,

Antoinette De Pinto

Head of Primary

Special Request

Some students are wearing Garmin and Fitbits to school and it has come to our attention that they are accessing games and messages during lessons. It would be best if students only wore a simple watch to school each day so that they can maintain focus on their learning.

NAPLAN 2021

We are currently preparing for The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) which will take place in May. Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be assessed in the areas of Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy.

Assessments are a normal part of the teaching and learning cycle so there is no need for students to feel under added pressure during NAPLAN. Year 3 and 5 classroom teachers will spend time with students teaching them how to navigate the screen when using the Online assessment platform.

We encourage students to approach the assessments with a positive mindset and to try their best.

Sports Update

This week’s focus has been on agility and power with the students pushing themselves in the Illinois Agility test and the Standing Broad Jump test.  It has been great to see the majority of students bringing their Asthma inhalers to all PE and Sport sessions – this is extremely important and must continue for their safety.

Next week we host our first interschool match against Loreto Nedlands Primary School for our Year 5 & 6’s.  Parents are required to complete the e-form to give consent for children to participate in all matches this term.

Catholic Performing Arts Festival

Entries for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival close next week. This festival involves thousands of students in Catholic schools across Western Australia and takes place during Term Three. Students in Years 4 to 6 who learn an instrument and would like to participate need to discuss this with their tutor to ensure entries are received by the end of next week. Further queries can be directed to Mrs Haydon or Mrs Bouhlas in the Music Department via email - music.secondary@johnxxiii.edu.au

Primary Singers (Year 2-3)

It was lovely to see everyone at the first rehearsal for Term Two. Please save the date (Friday 25 June) for the assembly performance in Week 10.

Wanju Voices (Year 4-6)

Rehearsals resume on Monday 3 May. Rehearsals are at 7:30am in the Osborne Room. With a number of performances occurring this term, it is essential that choir members are present and punctual for all rehearsals. New members are welcome. Please save the date (Friday 25 June) for the assembly performance in Week 10.

After receiving many accolades from St Joseph’s Parish, Wanju Voices have been asked to share their talents with the community again this term. Please save the date (Sunday 23 May – Pentecost). Further communication will be sent out regarding this event.
