Y8 Cell Models

Recently students in Year 8 Science have been studying the biology of cells - what they are made up of, the differences between the main types of cells, and how they function. For part of their KLT students were asked to make a 3D model of a cell with representation of all the organelles. There was a lot of creativity displayed with some models being made out of cake, jelly, plasticine, paper mache, and even one made from a polystyrene head. A range of these models were on display during the Open Night, impressing future parents, carers, and students alike.

Silent Reading

Our Year 7 English classes have been enjoying regular silent reading time. Classes spend these periods in the library, selecting their books and then enjoying a quiet period of reading along with their classmates. Our librarian Dianna is there to assist in book choice as well as borrowing if students can't bear to put their book back at the end of class!

Science

Hello Everyone! We have been doing great experimental work in Science this term! With my amazing 7E we have been looking at food webs and food chains using my $3 Kmart plastic animals & insects tubs!!! The students were able to select animals, identify & write the producers and using pencils show the relationships. Elowen, our In2Science University of Melbourne student, gave a thrilling presentation on her research which has taken her all over the world and she showed the students her amazing rock and fossil collection. The fabulous year 9E & 9H looked at identifying the pH of household chemicals using red cabbage dye as an indicator and the students were able to identify the resulting coloured solutions as either acidic, basic or neutral. The  super year 11's are studying Unit 1 AOS 2 Organic compounds and analysed the chemistry of these, they identified the pH of the chemicals, the solubility in water, combustion of cyclohexene and cyclohexane and distinguishing between an alkene and an alkane using a halogen based solution.

MISEP

Melbourne University Stem Education Program came to Coburg this week ! We are thrilled to have Indigenous students from the university presenting Indigenous perspectives in science to our year 8's. It was great to see the students engaged and interacting with the numerous activities during the program which included explaining the connection and importance of country and also yarning time. The students were able to see the different objects used and the connection between Indigenous Science and cultural knowledge.
