Living with Strength and Kindliness

Family Movie Fundraiser

Girls Can’t Surf!

We don’t usually need an excuse to celebrate but on this occasion we have been able to identify a number of reasons why we should host this community ‘get together’.

Firstly, the easing of COVID restrictions means that we can start to get back to some semblance of normal and one of the things that I know about St Joseph’s pre-COVID is that we have always enjoyed a good gathering.

The second reason is, International Women’s Day was on 8 March this year and it was the Monday of the Labour Day Long Weekend.  We didn’t miss it, we did recognise it in a variety of ways within our community, but we had a bigger plan that we couldn’t get off the ground in time. This plan took a little longer for us to get underway.  We all know that good things take time.

Thirdly, it’s nearly Mother’s Day, and we could see that there was a link between International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day and this was a good excuse for a gathering and would help us to recognise the great work of women in our communities.

So we put the two together and we now have a great excuse to get together.

So, let’s do it!

In the weeks since International Women’s Day we have been working with the Paramount Cinema to secure the 2021 Australian boutique film Girls Can’t Surf.  Although it was released on 11 March of this year it was not actually scheduled to come to the cinema in Echuca, so we had to negotiate for it to be shown here.

The story Girls Can’t Surf has been described as a film that "rides the thrilling wave of female empowerment" and as "revolutionary and ground breaking."

A recent review states that, "Girls Can’t Surf is a new Australian documentary that tracks the careers and challenges of the wave of women pro-surfers that came on the scene in the early 1980s. It outlines the challenges they faced and the joy of their triumph.  They paved the way for many young female surfers today."

There is also a lot of fun with retro vibes and a fantastic music line-up from the 1980s.

Our Family Movie Fundraiser Night will be held on Thursday 13th May at 7pm at the Paramount Cinema in Echuca.

We would like to invite everyone to attend!

Tickets are $20. Supper will be provided after the film. We will have a raffle on the evening. Tickets will also be available at the venue on the night.

Keep an eye out for an email through Operoo that will allow you to purchase your ticket online (and we will get your ticket to you or you can collect on the night) or you can purchase a ticket from the Front Office at SJC or at the Paramount Cinema.

All profits from the evening will be donated to Wellsprings for Women which is one of the ministries governed by Kildare Ministries (governing body of our school).  If you would like to know more about Wellsprings for Women please visit:  https://www.wellspringsforwomen.com/

In the Year of Wonder we are called to come together to celebrate all that is good.  Let’s celebrate our wonderful school community by coming together as a community for this event.

** If you are able to assist with some catering on the evening can you please email kwestblade@sje.vic.edu.au

Special thanks to our Student House Leaders who will be assisting with the organisation of  this special event.
