Geography News

On Wednesday 24th March, the Year 10 Geography (Degradation & Development) class braved the elements to visit Banyule Flats and conduct their fieldwork. As part of their coursework, the students had been investigating forces of environmental change and the management strategies that could be implemented in response to these. Banyule Flats is an area that has been designated State Environmental Significance but is currently facing a number of threats to its biodiversity, including reduced water flows, introduced species, population growth, and habitat fragmentation. During our fieldwork, students collected evidence of the environmental changes contributing to threatened biodiversity, as well as evidence of the management strategies being implemented. Highlights included getting up close to a rainbow lorikeet and seeing an entire family of kangaroos, as well as a brief stop at the playground before returning to school. Thanks to Ms. Vine for joining us on the day and for using an app on her phone to identify unknown plant species. Now the task of writing up their fieldwork reports begins!!
