Welcome to Term 2

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Term Two!

We had a fabulous Term One, with lots of great activities including the Easter Bonnet Parade, Interschool Sport, our history incursions and many more.  It was fabulous to see so many parents and extended family members share in their students' learning at our History Expo.

We are looking forward to another busy and exciting term in Year Five.

Warm regards,

Year Five Teachers

Interschool Sport

Well done to all of our Summer Interschool Sports teams who competed admirably throughout the competition.

The Winter Interschool Sports Competition will commence on Friday 10th of May. All Year Five students have been allocated a sport. Sports this term are netball, Australian Rules Football, soccer, t-ball, handball, hockey and mixed sports. Teams will practise on Fridays or Tuesday.

Students in football and hockey must wear a mouth guard for both the practise sessions and actual matches. For students who play soccer, mouth guards are recommended but not compulsory. Mouth guards are available for sale from chemists and sports retailers.

We have also asked children in both hockey and soccer to purchase shin guards. Long socks must also be worn to provide full shin protection.

On Monday the 20th of May the House Cross Country competition will be run at school from 9:30am until 12pm. Qualifying students will then go on to compete at the District Cross Country.

Curriculum

In Writing in Term Two, students will develop their skills in exposition, debating and poetry. In Reading, students will continue to focus on their individual reading goals, as well as begin Literacy Circle discussions based on their groups chosen text.

During our Maths sessions we will be focusing on fractions, money and financial matters, chance and shapes. We will consistently be developing problem solving skills and strategies using the four operations.

Unit of Inquiry

In Term Two we will focus on Biological Science. Our unit is titled “Desert Survivors”. Through this unit, students will explore some of the structural features and adaptations of desert plants and animals and will compare them with plants and animals that live in other environments.

Year 5 Camp to Phillip Island

We are all getting very excited about the upcoming Year Five camp to Phillip Island. It is a fantastic experience which the students will thoroughly enjoy!

Information was sent out last term including dates, costs, packing details and forms to be returned. These can be found in your 'News Feed' on Compass. Please keep details and the schedule handy for your own reference. In particular the payment schedule, departure, arrival and pick up times.
