Beachside Division Athletics Carnival – Monday 4th September

The GEC Athletics team competed in the Beachside Division on Monday the 4th September. While the dark clouds loomed overhead at the Sandringham Athletics Club, threatening a torrential downpour, an absolute force of nature unleashed a storm of his own. Haddi El Shorbagy not only made it rain blue first place ribbons, he smashed records with such a force that you could actually hear them breaking like thunderclaps. He obliterated the previous discus record by 5.07m and set a new one at 30.96m. His javelin throw of 33.50 surpassed the previous record by 2.69m and his shot put of 13.72m was 1.38m better than the previous record. As he is only in Year 7, we look forward to watching Haddi’s GEC Athletics career continue to grow and develop, and we wish him good luck at the Southern Regional finals.

I have to say that I was absolutely impressed with all of the students who participated on the day. Every single student who competed in an event put their heart and soul into their effort and strived to achieve their best. It has been a difficult year for GEC Sport, as we have been without a Gym for over a year now, and the paddock space has not provided an ideal training area as we have had in previous years. Even though we have not had the training sessions that we have had in previous years, the sheer grit and determination of the GEC students shone through on the day – as can be seen by our extensive list of winners and place getters.

A special mention must be made to our Year 12 athletes – Charly Layton, Alex Christopoulos and Andrew Wilson. These students have been major contributors in sport at Glen Eira College. From all of us in the GEC community, we would like to say thank you for your effort, school pride and spirit that you have each displayed throughout your years at GEC. While your presence in the GEC team will be missed, we know you have passed the baton of your passion and pride for GEC sport to the younger students to carry on.

With the new Gym opening soon, coupled with the raw talent we have in our students, the forecast for GEC Sport is looking very bright. Watch this space in 2018…
