Say cheesy!

Cafe 135 in the spotlight

The Perth media developed an insatiable appetite for Cafe 135 last week. In case you missed it, the College cafe attracted State-wide radio, newspaper and online coverage as canteen staff prepared to cook and serve their 200,000th cheesy.

Manager Cindy McIntyre was invited on four prime-time breakfast radio programs, speaking live on air for almost 20 minutes to ABC 720, MIX 94.5, HIT 92.9 and 882 6PR. 96FM also joined in the fun while ABC Perth sent a video journalist behind the scenes to produce a short film for its website, which attracted more than 50,000 views.

Just before recess, the College welcomed back Class of 2002 graduate-turned-radio-personality Pete Curulli who, with his 92.9 entourage including former Eagles player Xavier Ellis, served cheesies to the long line of students and starred in a funny, nostalgic video (with shout-outs to Tongerlo and Ms Hilton) for the station’s social media channel. After being mentioned in The West Australian, the milestone moment also featured on Page 1 of the Canning Examiner and in the Canning and Southern Gazettes plus Community News digital e-papers.

“It started as a chat between the canteen staff about how many cheesies we had cooked together since Carmel started 10 years ago - and when we worked out that the figure was 200,000, it spread like wildfire,’’ said Cindy (many times that day).

The result was a fun recess, a surprise prize for Year 7 Izumi who bought the 'golden cheesy', and some public sentimentality for school canteens in what commentators described as 'talkback gold'.

Footnote: Cindy, Carmel and Cheryl, who make 480 cheesies a week, have officially stopped counting. A big thank you to everyone involved in this memorable event.
