YEAR 12 CAMP REFLECTION

Year 12 Camp was an enlightening opportunity for the Class of 2019 to escape from the harsh reality of looming SACs and mental breakdowns. We got a chance to relax with our friends and other peers in a beautiful environment that allowed us to get to know one another better.

The annual Redface competition was proclaimed by many teachers to be the best they had seen in years. Groups performed a variety of different acts, including a song, skits, parodies, and even a dance party spotlighting Mr Corkill. At the end of the night, Blackburn secured our first win since the competition began in 2012.

My favourite experience was being dragged out of bed by my friends at 6 in the morning to try and look for some dolphins at the beach. Despite not personally seeing any, watching the evocative sunrise and wading in the freezing water was calming, especially since I was surrounded by those who were going to help me get through the year ahead.

The multiple presentations by inspirational people and the talks from the JMSS staff helped us gain a perspective on the obstacles we will face this year, and how we can overcome them. Paper bags with handwritten notes from other members of our cohort brought the camp to an emotional and memorable end.

The 2019 Year 12 Camp was an unforgettable experience that we will all cherish forever.

SCHOOL COUNCILLOR ELECTION VOTES ARE IN!

It is with great pleasure to announce

SATHEESH KUMAR PACHIAPPAN and

DAVID DAVIES

as the the new School Councillors.

Both come with interesting and varied backgrounds and will be an asset to the school. We welcome you both and look forward to supporting your direction and vision of the school along with the school community.

We wish to thank all candidates for participating and to all those who voted. It was great to see such an interest in the wellbeing of the students and the school.  As our school continues to grow it is important to have members of our parent community to help guide JMSS through the next stage of its development.

Work Experience is well underway with the Year 10 students. All Year 10 students are required to participate in work experience unless already discussed with the Careers Team. We have emailed several work experience vacancies to all Year 10 students and are currently sorting through applicants. Students do need to continue to look for placements as securing one can be hard and we do not have enough places available for all students. If you need any help with work experience please come and see us in the Careers area.

If you have any questions please feel free to email Ms Carter, kirstine.carter@jmss.vic.edu.au or Ms Whitty, kim.whitty@jmss.vic.edu.au. You can also come and see us anytime on the ground floor near the stairs under Flannery House. Ms Carter is at school every day and Mrs Whitty is available only on Thursdays.

YEAR 10 MEET THE MENTOR EVENING

On Monday 4th March the school welcomed all year 10 students and their families to meet the mentors, staff and to view the school. Was great to see so many families arrive and be so interested in their children school life.  We enjoyed presentations from Peter, Sally and Andrew and by all accounts all Year 10 students are settling in perfectly, enjoying their classes, making friendships and immersing themselves in their house teams.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY BREAKFAST

JMSS Plastic Oceans Ambassadors
JMSS Plastic Oceans Ambassadors

Last week we enjoyed a breakfast in honour of International Women's Day. Australia’s IWD 2019 theme, "More Powerful Together", recognizes the important role we all play – as women, men, and gender diverse people.

It takes all of us, working in collaboration and across that which sometimes divides us, breaking down stereotypes and gendered roles to create a world where women and girls everywhere have equal rights and opportunities.

Professor Cristina Varsavsky was our guest speaker. Professor Cristina Varsavsky holds an education focused position in the Faculty of Science at Monash University. Her interests in the scholarship of learning and teaching include broad areas of mathematics and science education and was an inspiration to listen to.

The breakfast was about camaraderie and to celebrate and respect the work of our mothers, sisters, female teachers and female students. It was also fantastic to see so many male staff members and students supporting this event.
