Matthew Flinders G.H.S 50 Year Reunion - 1969 to 2019

1969 was a memorable year. Man first walked on the moon and myself together with many other girls began our secondary schooling at Matthew Flinders Girls High School. On Sunday the 7th of April, approximately 35 ex students and one teacher celebrated 50 years since that time.  We had attendees from Queensland, Sydney, the South Australian border, country Victoria and obviously many apologies as well.

The room filled with chatter and laughter as we recounted past school memories, talked about our career paths and our families. Our Head Prefect was MC for the afternoon and we answered trivia questions about school and enjoyed a roving mic where people shared personal stories about school days and life beyond. We laughed at the funny stories and shed a tear when sadness was also shared. Fingers were busy entering phone details into mobiles as friendships were rekindled.

A table of memorabilia was set up, and what an array it was!  Deb wore her grey school hat, part of the uniform that preceded the current uniform. Angela brought along her hand written school reports. We had photos and ‘The Log’ year book from each of our school years. On display were programmes from athletic carnivals, awards, badges and a Form 1 1969 booklist. Glenda even brought along a complete set of our Form 1 (Year 7) sewing projects.

It was a wonderful afternoon of remembering, sharing and celebrating. Many of us are blessed to still call some of these women our best friends after 50 years. Matthew Flinders has certainly produced many women who have displayed leadership, inspiration and have been, and in many cases still are, respected role models in their chosen careers. In the words of our former Head Prefect at the end of the day,

“ Who would have thought that those few years of schooling at Matthew Flinders would have had such an  impact on us all? ”

One thing is for sure, we will not be waiting another 50 years until our next celebration.
