Year 8 Badminton
On Tuesday the 19th of May the Year 8 Badminton team played in the Geelong School Sport round robin competition. The members of the team were Millie Ward, Jersyn Doh, Lily Brown, Tabeta Khokhar, Talisha O’Connor, Harper Dawson, Rachel Kaiser and Caitlyn Sager. In the first round Matthew Flinders defeated Grovedale Secondary College. The girls then played Geelong High and were again victorious. The team had reached the Grand final and had to play off against Belmont High to decide the Geelong champion school. The girls battled hard against Belmont and fought out every point but they could not match their opponent’s skill level. I would like to congratulate the girls who represented Matthew Flinders on the day; they displayed good sportsmanship, took their turn at umpiring and supported each other throughout the competition.
Year 7 Netball
On Thursday May 21st two Year 7 Netball teams participated in the Geelong School Sport round robin competition. The following girls played in the ‘A’ section: Zali Burgess, Samantha Chapman, Brooke Trotter, Samantha Hovey, Jessica Nielsen, Bridie Colla and Phoebe Lee. The team started with an awesome win against Geelong High 17 goals to 10. They then played a close match against Bellarine Secondary College but were beaten 16 goals to 10 goals. This placed the girls second in the pool, which meant their final game was against Lara Secondary College. The team went on to win this game convincingly. This was a fantastic win as the girls had to finish the second half with only six players due to an injury to Phoebe Lee.
The following girls made up the ‘B’ team: Felicity Galea, Marnie Wangman, Karla Beaumont, Hayley Bath, Lani Puttyfoot, Ruby Watts and Madison Sharp. The team started with a strong win against North Geelong 16 goals to 1 goal. They followed this up with a tough match against Bellarine where they lost 6 goals to 9 goals. In their final match of the day the team finished with a fantastic 16-2 win against Lara. Overall the girls finished second in their pool.
I would like to congratulate all the girls who represented Matthew Flinders. Both teams’ level of skill improved as the day progressed and the girls supported one another throughout the competition.
