Just Think Program

Ms Scorringe and Ms Elkin’s VCAL class has been out and about over the past few weeks.

They have taken part in the Just Think program run by Geelong Cats. This looks at the impact alcohol has on young people and aims to have adolescents think about delaying their first drink. Students learnt a lot, enjoyed a small amount of exercise and came up with some great designs for a banner for the players to run through in the Just Think round later in the year.

Multiskills Training Centre

They also attended the open day of the Multiskills Training Centre where they were able to learn about the civil construction industry and have a go at various pieces of equipment – cranes, skid steers and front end loaders. They also took a fork lift through its paces.

Lethbridge Winery

Students attended Lethbridge Winery to learn about the wine industry and to scope the area where they will build a pigpen for the many piglets on the farm. They will be going back to build this pen in the near future. Many outcomes in Literacy, Work Related Skills and Numeracy will be met by participating in this project.

Biolab

The class attended Biolab for a session called the Human Machine. Here they tested the body’s response to exercise. They gathered base (resting) data and then exercise data for skin temperature, breathing rate and heart rate. This data was brought back to class and analysed by calculating means and drawing graphs. In a Biolab incursion, students were shown how to design a fair competition to test which design of paper plane flew the greatest distance. In the future, the group will aim to organise a competition for a local primary school.
