Introducing ……….

Two of our star year 10 Chisholm Circle Program students who have experienced what VET (Vocational Education and Training) is really like this year. They have developed real skill training and explored applied learning in a TAFE environment preparing for future career choices.

Student comments:

Hi, my name is Sam Skipper, I am very lucky to be a part of the year 10 circle program.

In semester 1, I did Furniture Making.  I enjoyed it because it was hands on.  I made a small table that I was able to take home.

In semester 2, I am doing Electronics where I am on a computer designing a fan that will be printed on a  3D printer.

Sam Skipper.

My name is Phillip Zytsel, I am part of the year 10 Circle Program.  I enjoyed semester one because I was working with wood and learnt skills that will help me in my future.  An example of what I learnt was making joins and using a copying saw.  We made a table, vegetable rack and carry on tool box.

These two students have enjoyed The Circle Program so much this year that they have committed to VET certificate courses into 2019. The VET program will assist the students to complete their year 11 and 12 studies and gain a qualification in the vocation of their choice.

Applications for The Circle Program is now open for Year 10 students in 2019. Students can choose from five different VET areas: Building & Construction, Engineering & Electronics, Hair & Beauty, Health and Early Childhood Education and Hospitality & Kitchen Operations. Students enrolled in the program will attend Chisholm Dandenong campus half a day per week for the entire school year. Material costs will apply.

Year 10 Work Experience

Rawa Khan and Jewel Dao from year 10 Carwatha College P-12 were selected go on work experience at TATA Consulting Services (TCS) as part of their work experience program, ‘GoIT Girls’.

The program focussed on promoting girls to pursue careers in the STEM industry.

Rawa’s comments

During the program we got to learn many new skills and techniques such as the ‘agile principles’ and ways to train your brain to maximise its use. We took part in a few hands-on activities such as the marshmallow challenge and creating a website layout.

During the week we met many people who had successful careers in IT and other relevant fields. We had several mentoring sessions where we talked with mentors from TATA, TCS, NBN and Telstra, all of them were very helpful and empowered us to be successful in our future careers.

On the Wednesday we also went to NBN headquarters in Docklands, where we had a tour of the building and saw how they operated. NBN  challenged us to come up with a presentation in groups regarding a future problem NBN might face. This activity boosted our confidence and in the end Jewel Dao’s team won. We made some great friendships and connections that we will cherish and know will be a support system for us.
