Tercentenary Founder’s Day celebration

Lasallian schools across Melbourne recognised the tercentenary of our Founder on Friday of last week.

Our year levels (each of which had a mass and afternoon activity at a particular location) went to the following settings:

Year 7 and 8 students journeyed to St John’s College, Dandenong

Our Year 9 students joined St James College for a Mass at the Cathedral in Melbourne and then went on to the Academy of Mary Immaculate, Fitzroy

Year 10 and 11 students were on-site at St Bede’s College and hosted students from St John’s College and De La Salle College, Malvern

Year 12 students travelled to Malvern for the day.

As can be appreciated, the logistics in moving 4,300 students and over 500 staff were considerable. All venues reported excellent participation from the students and an increased sense of awareness of how we are part of not only a network of Lasallian schools in Melbourne, but also worldwide where we form part of the one million plus student cohort across eighty countries.

It was a day to remember the many  efforts and energies of the De La Salle brothers. Quite simply, we are who are today because of their foresight and zeal.

We thank our three sister host schools. I also pay tribute to the young men of St Bede’s College. On such a day it can be seen that they are a willing, cooperative, well-mannered and committed group who have an affection for their school.

Class of 2018

We welcomed back our youngest Old Collegians last week. It was lovely to hear of their transition stories of life after secondary studies. It was interesting to see them return to the downball, four square areas that they occupied with such passion last year and start up a game as if they had never left!

One of the strengths of our College is in being able to cater for a wide ranging group of student interests and abilities.  This was borne out by seeing the diverse pathways that our Class of 2018 have taken. We are proud of every one of them and wish them God’s blessing in the years to come.

Generation in Jazz

Our music students and staff travelled to Mt Gambier recently to play at this festival, the largest of its kind in Australia. Congratulations to all our young musicians and vocalists as they acquitted themselves extremely well.

A special mention goes to staff member, Walter Saluni, for winning the Generations in Jazz Vocal Director’s Award.

The Club

This Australian classic comes to life this week in our Auditorium. Our Theatre Studies students have worked well together to produce and perform this play. It promises to be an entertaining and still relevant piece.

Probus

We were delighted to host this older group from our local  community. Our young student eLeaders were able to assist this large group with numerous IT programs and settings. It was delightful to see young men working so respectfully and sincerely with veteran adults.

Fr Justel

We are blessed to have a number of Chaplains who assist us with our liturgical needs at St Bede’s College. One such Chaplain has been Fr Justel, who is assistant Parish Priest of Aspendale and Mordialloc. Fr Justel said his final Mass here on Tuesday as he is shortly to leave for his own Parish in St Albans. We thank him for his generous contribution and wish him every blessing in his new endeavours.
