Public speaking - Taking a Chance
Rently a number of our students competed in a public speaking competition offered through Rotorary. One of our students, Ryan Chams El Dean shared his talk with me and I was so impressed by the ideas he articulated I was keen to share some of his thoughts with you as they are universal.
His talk was called , " Its always the right time to take a chance" In his speech he talked about the need to deal with his fears if he was to take a chance, yet how rewarding it is when you can manage that. Ryan said, " The truth is that everytime you take a big risk in life, no matter how it ends, you're always glad you took it. Even if it turns out to be a giant failure I'll have learnt something from it. Our mistakes make us who we are, and we learn and grow with every choice we make. In the end we will regret the chances we didn't take" Ryan gave a terrific example from his own life about taking a chance and joining a basketball team, he explained that he almost let his fear get the better of him and how nervous he was, "...my Dad got my first goal on camera , and boy was I feeling proud of myself." he went on to say, " I've been playing basketball since March and I love it. If I didn't take that chance I would never have found a sport I love so much, I would have missed out on so many new friends and opportunities." Ryan then challenged his audience to take an opportunity that came their way, "I think you will amazed at how many opportunities come your way that you might usually ignore. Maybe, just maybe, one of those chances will completely change your life."
Ryan included this message in his speech;
"It's impossible", said Pride.
"It's risky", said Experience.
"I t's pointless". said Reason.
"Give it a try", whispered the Heart.
Well done Ryan, this is such a valuable message for everyone I know that I always try to remember this and encourage others to give things a go, what an excellent young example you are to your friends.
Thankyou, Gill Van Der Ende (Chaplain)
