The Humanities teach us to reason about being human, to ask questions about our world and develop informed and critical citizens.

The Humanities:

  1. Help us understand others through their languages, history and cultures.
  2. Foster social justice and equality.
  3. Reveal how people in the past, have tried to make moral, spiritual and intellectual sense of the world.
  4. Teach and foster empathy.
  5. Teach us about our environment and how we must look after it.
  6. Teach us to deal critically and logically with subjective, complex and imperfect information.
  7. Teach us to weigh evidence and consider more than one side of every question.
  8. Build skills in writing and critical reading.
  9. Encourage us to think creatively.

We are currently all facing challenging and complex social change. Our individual and collective behaviour and response to these changes are so important at this time.  As teachers at St John’s Regional College, we aim to shape future citizens and future leaders, who can engage and respond critically and positively to a changing world.

A glass – Beyonce Lay

It had started to rain, it poured down slowly, each droplet was quickly absorbed by the concrete. Brick woke up to the sound of the trickling rain, he stared at the droplets on the window for a moment, then carefully reached for his crutch and made his way into the kitchen to pour himself a glass of brandy.

He sat himself on the edge of the couch and sipped his glass. He remembered his call with Skipper last night ‘I love you’ Skipper had confessed. Was it true? He thought, he was drunk – he was just confused, it’s not true. Brick watched the water droplets begin to cover his window; he could almost count each drop. Distracted by the rain he soon realised he had finished his drink and his glass was now empty.

Year 7 Italian

Buongiorno students,

In February 2020, I started in Year 7 learning Italian which was a completely new language for me. As a class, we started learning from Mr. Sirianni the geography of Italy and its surrounding regions which gave me a greater understanding of the country and a feel for it. We then moved on to learning and naming the regions and its capital cities which was so much fun!! Most of Term 2, involved learning at home remotely which was challenging. However, the Italian teachers were very approachable via email and were there to help always which made it easier to study and learn Italian. Another topic we covered was a personal presentation in Italian which tested our written and oral skills. Near the end of Term 2, we saw an Italian movie called 'Rosso Come il Cielo' which was a great end to Semester 1. Finally, I just want to say a big thank you to all the Italian teachers for teaching an incredible language.
