5/6s Learning from Home

Term 3 Week 3

To parents / guardians of grade 5s and 6s,

As we find ourselves in another round of remote and flexible learning in Term 3, we have been impressed by the resilience and confidence with which our students have re-adopted an online learning program. We thank you all for your continued support and guidance at home which has made this a smooth transition.

In Term 3, we have streamlined the learning requirements and placed priority on the students’ wellbeing by allocating 30 mins of wellbeing or physical activity per day. Your child will be asked to complete five tasks per day that have been planned to take a certain amount of time:

  • Reading task (30 mins)
  • Writing task (30 mins)
  • Maths task (45 mins)
  • Specialist activity (45mins) - PE, Art, Music, Italian, Performing Arts
  • Rotating task (45 mins) - Integrated (twice a week) / Reading reflection (once a week) / Independent writing (twice a week)
  • We encourage students to complete 30 mins of a physical or wellbeing activity per day. Teachers will suggest activities for students but students can choose their own.

Our integrated unit this term is an inquiry into Government in Australia, with a focus on how laws are made and changed, the voting process, history of government and the different levels of government. Students will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the Government and how the current system operates.

Our literacy sessions will focus on information and explanation texts. We will continue to develop a number of reading comprehension strategies such as activating and connecting, summarising and synthesising, and questions and questioning. In writing, revision and further development of the ‘6 + 1 Traits of Writing’ will continue to be at the forefront, with the traits of word choice and presentation being a focus.

Students will be working through the following areas in mathematics: multiplication and division, measurement, chance, and financial literacy. You may find your child asking questions about the family budget, bills and food costs.

There will also be some lessons with a focus on cybersafety. You may like to chat with your child about their responses to these activities.

We ask that if your child has a day off school work, could you please contact either the office via flexibuzz or your child’s classroom teacher via email, to notify us that they won’t be available online.

Just a reminder, your child has the opportunity for daily contact with their teacher via a Webex meeting to ask any questions or clarify tasks or by making private comments on any task that they may need help with.

Please feel free to contact your child's classroom teacher via email should you have any questions.
