Term 3 Week 3

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Term 3 to all of our Grade Prep families. We trust you all enjoyed a relaxing, safe holiday break and continuing to make the most of the opportunity to spend time together.

Unit Topic

Our topic for Term 3 is ‘How does our body work and how do we keep it healthy, active and safe?’ This topic will involve students learning about internal and external body parts and systems, exploring different ways to be active and safe as well as how to keep our bodies and minds healthy.

100 days at school

During term 3 we will be celebrating reaching 100 days of learning. Our 100th day will be Tuesday the 11th of August. The students have learnt so much in that time, under extraordinary circumstances!  On that day, tasks will all be related to the number 100 and we will invite students to attend a whole class meeting via WebEx. They may like to dress up as themselves when they are 100 years old!

Literacy

Throughout this term, students will be encouraged to continue to develop their independent reading and writing skills. We will be doing activities related to traditional fairy tales, practising to retell them and identify the characters, setting, problem and solution. This will help us to write our own narratives during the term. We will also read information texts to help develop our understanding of the human body and health. Students are taking part in weekly journal writing to continue to build their ability to write personal recounts and are working towards adding more details for their audience.

Keep practising to read the high frequency words to assist in building reading fluency.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students will be working on developing their understanding of the concepts of addition and subtraction. They will use a range of materials and teaching aids to assist them. We will also be covering length, time, coding and basic 3D shapes.

We are thankful to our families who are providing assistance with the implementation of remote learning tasks. You and your children are doing an amazing job!

The preps have participated in week 2 and 3 of remote learning with a true growth mindset. All the teachers are impressed with the effort students are putting into their work. You fill our buckets every day! In reading and writing preps have been focusing on narratives and identifying their main elements. They practised retelling familiar stories and compared different versions of narratives to think about the similarities and differences. They have also begun to make entries in their own writing journals to recount past experiences. As part of  our integrated unit students responded to the text ‘Mindful Monkey, Happy Panda’ to  see how long they could keep their focus on a task they enjoy. They have been using their senses to visualise, describe and to relax. Being mindful benefits our reading, writing and well-being.

In numeracy students have been learning that addition means adding two groups to get a larger amount. The symbols + and = have been explored and used when writing number sentences. Preps have been making models, drawing diagrams and then reflecting which strategy they prefer when adding amounts to see how many they have altogether. There seemed to be a lot of fun during coding activities as some programmers (parents) coded their robots (children) to tidy their rooms and unload dishwashers. Instructions were clear and given in sequence. Robots were great listeners and followed most instructions.

Our preps and their families are amazing! It is wonderful to see you all online having fun with your learning.
