Co-curricular - Junior Sport

Term 3 has begun and the boys in the Junior School have hit the ground running (literally). Thursday saw the boys in the Junior School compete in the annual House Athletics Carnival. The day was perfect for athletics with a clear blue sky, light breeze, and dry conditions underfoot.

The boys came primed and ready to compete and showed great support for their houses and individual competitors throughout the day. There were many creative chants through the day and the house war cries were taken to the next level by a group of pride-filled Captains and Vice Captains.

There were many close races and the points between the houses were close all day. Boys really pushed themselves and gave their best whether it be a track, field or novelty event. This certainly made the day a great success.

Special mentions must go to Zac Bechara of Year 5. Zac set a new record in the 11’s Year 5 100m sprint. The previous record was set in 2009 at 14.22 seconds, Zac’s new record stands at 14.16 seconds. This is made all the more impressive as Zac slipped at the start. Well done Zac. Special mention also to the winning House on the day, Hickey. They were pushed all the way by Rice House in a tight tussle throughout the day. Final House points for the carnival were as follows:

Hickey522
Rice 442
Coghlan362
Crichton350
Berg348
Hanrahan335

Well done to all Houses and boys for a fantastic day. I would also like to extend my thanks and gratitude to the Junior School staff. Without you, days like the Athletics Carnival would not be possible. Thank you for all your time and efforts to make the carnival a special day for the boys. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated teachers in the Junior School.

Saturday 25 July also saw the winter season kick off. It was a great first round for the Junior School teams with the vast majority of teams coming away with a victory. What was more impressive was the manner in which our boys conducted themselves. All showing great sportsmanship on and off the field. In particular two boys from 11 F3 Football side, William Chen and Luca Franze of Year 5 who, in their first outing representing the College gave up this opportunity and volunteered to play for an under-strength opposition. A fantastic effort boys! You have really led the way in showcasing the true nature and value of sport.

I would also like to thank all the parents for your willingness and flexibility in following all the various COVID-19 procedures put in place by the College and competing schools. We will need to keep doing this for the foreseeable future and your efforts have not gone unnoticed. It is the best way we have to keep the winter season going. Please make sure you have downloaded TeamApp to your phone and request access. This will give you access to all the documents required for the weekends as well as up-to-date information on trainings and games.

Unfortunately, I have the sad news that this year’s IPSHA Athletics Carnival has been cancelled along with NSWCIS Athletics Carnival. I know this will be disappointing for many boys and their families. It has been a difficult year in regard to our representative pathways and I am very proud of all our boys and the way in which they have coped with the disappointments. The last major IPSHA event for this year is Gymnastics, scheduled for Term 4. I will keep you up-to-date as soon as information comes to hand.
