Reading
This term the students will be extending their comprehension skills by focusing on synthesising. Synthesising a text is the process of pulling together background knowledge, newly learned ideas, connections, inferences and summaries into a complete and original understanding of the text. When students synthesise, they are made aware of how their thinking changes and evolves as they read a text.

Writing
During Writer’s Workshop this term, the students will be building upon their knowledge of Information Reports and how they are organised. There will be a particular focus on our students using their voice to sound like an expert on their chosen topics.
There will be a Webex session where students will work in small groups for guided reading and guided writing.

Maths
This term we are focusing on fractions. In addition to what we have already covered, in the coming weeks, we will be looking at how to add and subtract fractions. We are also going to investigate how fractions relate to decimals and percentages, with some real world applications of these concepts. After this unit, we will be looking at different aspects of time, shape and location. Maths is going to be the focus of our small group Webex sessions each Thursday to allow for more targeted teaching.

Inquiry
In Level 5, we are learning about natural disasters. As we are once again undertaking Remote Learning, we have structured our Webex sessions to enable us to teach inquiry on Monday and Friday. On Monday we begin with an introduction to the weekly topic. Then students are given opportunities to choose a mini project or area of interest and research, create and then present their findings. The students seem to really enjoy sharing their self-directed learning. In addition to looking at our current pandemic – Covid19 -we have been enjoying learning about Fires, Floods, Earthquakes and Tsunamis.
