Level 1

Literacy

Reading: This term we have been strengthening our understanding of comprehension strategies such as summarising and making connections between texts and our personal experiences. There is a strong focus on encouraging students to read independently and aloud. We recommended parents ask questions when reading to gauge comprehension including;

Who was the main character?

How did the character change throughout the story?

What happened throughout the story?

What do you think this story will be about? What will happened next?

Does this remind you of anything in your life or another book, why?

Writing: This term we have been working on developing our understanding of narrative writing. Students have been learning how to develop characters and settings as well as improving sentences to ensure our writing is interesting to entertain our audience.

How can you create interesting sentences?

What ways can you describe a character?

What do you as the author try to achieve by writing a narrative?

Spelling: This Term we have continued to follow the Jolly Phonics Spelling and Grammar Program. We have had a strong focus on the long vowel sounds (ai, ee, ie, oa, ue, magic e and ay)  and will continue to do so throughout term 3. We have looked into adjectives and pronouns and will begin looking at verbs in the past, present and future tense.

Numeracy

In Maths this term we have been exploring subtraction through a rich and hands on approach.  We have focused on a range of skills that Level 1 students will be able to use to solve subtraction problems now and in the future.

Level 1 continues to be a year of developing the building blocks needed for our students to enjoy, grow and thrive in mathematics.

For the remainder of Term 3 we will continue to focus on skills in subtraction, skip counting and problem solving.  We will continue to focus on Time, both analogue and digital.

We encourage all parents to continue to engage with their children’s work.  We recommend questioning students regularly about; telling the time, 10 facts and skip counting. This will help supplement the online maths curriculum we will continue to deliver.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is Mini-beasts. The skills we are focusing on are: researching, investigating, sorting and finding relevant information to answer specific questions.

We are aiming to develop our understandings and knowledge of mini beasts and develop our research skills.

Level Essential Questions:

What are mini beasts?

What are the different characteristic of different types of mini beasts?

What is the life cycle of different mini beasts?

What do mini beasts need to survive?

Where do they live?

We hope you enjoy journeying into the world of mini beasts.
