Modelled Reading using Teacher Sprints

Teacher Learning:  Modelled Reading

Last week I mentioned that all teacher teams are focussing on improvement in Reading, with a particular focus on Modelled Reading through Teaching Sprints. Last week all teacher teams met and engaged in professional dialogue based on evidence informed research around Modelled Reading. Teams have developed goals where they can work towards improving their practice in Modelled Reading. Teacher improvement work is something that normally occurs when teachers work in classrooms with students, however this term we have the added complexity of teaching and learning remotely, and teachers are going to continue with this work whilst teaching remotely.

Modelled Reading is basically reading to, or reading aloud to the children. It involves children listening to a text/story which is read aloud by the teacher. It provides an opportunity for teachers to demonstrate an enjoyment and passion for reading as well as teaching a particular skill. This is clearly articulated by the teacher before reading the text, so that students see a purpose in learning to read.

When your child is learning online, you may hear your child’s teacher talking about Modelled Reading and you may see them implementing some new strategies.

Here is an example of Miss Suzanne Grufferty reading to the Prep/1 students. She begins by introducing the book to the children, reading the title, author and illustrator. She then orientates them to the text by looking at the picture on the front cover and talking about what the book might be about, encouraging children to make predictions and connections with their own experiences. She then clearly articulates the learning intention for this modelled reading session prior to reading to the children. At the end of the story she then engages children in thinking related to the learning intention.

Parent Session Monday 10th August 2pm

In a couple of weeks, on Monday 10th August, at 2pm till 2:30pm, I will be running an online Parent Session on Modelled Reading and how you can support your child at home. This will be similar to the parent session we ran in first term on Spelling, which the parents who attended, found extremely valuable. If you are interested in attending this session, please email me directly so that I can send you a Zoom link for the session.

Finally, please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning during remote learning.
