C Block and the Beugelaar Gallery are currently exhibiting Unit 4 Visual Communication and Design and Studio Art Folio works for current students and teacher viewing. We are however pleased to be presenting you with an alternative online exhibition coming soon, stay tuned.

Remote learning has provided an additional challenge for our final year students working on design folios, and they have worked incredibly hard to bring their ideas to fruition. Below Tom Poletti gives us an insight into his experience.

Visual Communication Design (VCD) is definitely a grind. I remember multiple times in Term 1, where the night before our work was due, almost the whole class stayed back after school to finish their projects. But VCD is also a lot of fun and a great break from the book work of other subjects. I love design for its mix of problem solving and creativity.
VCD covers three design fields: industrial, environmental and communication. My favourite is industrial design, which is the design of physical products. Environmental design includes architectural and interior design. Communication design is the design of 2D graphics, advertising and interfaces.

When designing there are many things to consider and no single correct solution. In VCD we follow a design process which begins with creating a design brief which outlines criteria our design will need to fulfill. From there we can begin researching, before moving onto sketching and other methods.

For unit 4 of VCD, students can choose a design project to work on for two terms. This year that was somewhat difficult as this section of the course was mostly done from home due to Coronavirus. Remotely, it was a little harder to receive feedback and we lacked access to the school’s equipment.
VCD, like any folio subject, is a lot of work but also a lot of fun if you are creatively driven.
