This month on SchoolTV - Raising Boys

Many parents will attest to the fact that most boys are active, loud, rambunctious and prone to rough play, but this should not affect how a parent acts towards their son. Be careful not to pigeon-hole your son into sex specific behaviours or gender roles. The male brain is distinctly different in its development. A boy’s physical maturity is often at odds with his mental and brain development.

Societal beliefs about how to raise boys can sometimes influence their adult carers. Although we are not determined by our biology, it is a factor. It is important to support boys in their natural tendencies and nurture their strengths and abilities. Teach them the skills they need for their future and to develop a healthy identity. It is important for boys to have a role model they can connect with and acknowledge who they are. One of the most important determinants for a boy’s development is how secure they feel growing up.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will gain a better understanding into some of the more complex issues relating to raising boys. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

Around the Year Groups

Year 12 - University Applications

Students have been emailed by Mrs O’Neill reminding them of the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) if they are intending to apply for university through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC). If students are accessing this scheme, please see Mrs O’Neill or myself in the coming weeks. The deadline for applications through UAC is 20 November. See https://www.uac.edu.au/assets/documents/eas/eas-application-guide.pdf for more information regarding categories of eligibility.

Year 11 - Survival Pack

As the Year 11 cohort embark on their HSC studies, the Pastoral Care team distributed survival packs to the students last week. The survival kit is a gesture of promoting positive wellbeing during this demanding and often stressful time. We hope the items we have sourced are of some use to the students. Thanks to Mrs Cook, Mrs Shoemark and Mrs Lees for putting the packs together.

Year 10 - Work Experience Program

It is pleasing to see a number of Year 10 students undertaking work experience during Term 4. Students wishing to organise work experience are to liaise with Mrs Barrett (Careers Advisor) at least 2 weeks before commencing work experience to enable the administrative process.

Year 9 - Tea Gardens Outdoor Education Camp (9-11 December 2020)

With the easing of COVID restrictions the end of year camp will go ahead. Mr Williams will be sending the relevant information to parents and students in the coming weeks.

Year 8 - Pindari Adventures Camp (9-11 November 2020)

With the easing of COVID restrictions the end of year camp will go ahead. Mrs Bearup will be sending the relevant information to parents and students in the coming weeks.

Year 7 - Monday Morning Year Meetings

During the Year meeting students are recognised for their efforts in class and participation in   college activities. It is wonderful to see so many students receiving awards.
